The headwalers of the Paraguay riv ir are lu the plateau that extends into Mntto (Jrosso. The sources of rivers that run southward to Join the Uio de la Plata are sometimes within a few miles of the streams that (low down the liorlh side of the plateau aud become tributaries -of the Amazou By Horseback Five Hundred Miles. From the headwaters of the i'ara uMiay it is a Journey of .UK) miles by horseback to the hendwutera of the Itlver of Doubt. These headwaters are on a great plateau, between H.OOU and 4.000 feet altove sea level. From there the rivers drop abruptly to the floor of the Amazon, making navigation ex ceptionally dangerous because of the numerous rapids and waterfalls. The Madeira and the Tapajos both contain great waterfalls, among tbein being some of tile greatest lu South America, if not In the world. The river between those two streums.
