Two samples of alfalfa seed were offered for sale, one for ?".'' pn .hundred and one for $10 per hund red. Tests of both samples were made. In the first no weed seed wa found and no chaff or dirt; the ger mination was 94 per cent. In tho second sample seven per cent was weed seed, two per cent., was (-halt and dirt and germination was SO per cent. At these figures, you pay $20 for 94 pounds of seed that will grow, and 100 pounds would cost $21. 2S, by buying the first sample. If you buy the second samplo, apparently fo much cheaper, you pay $10 for 71 pounds of seed that will grow or at a rate of $22.54 for 100 pounds of good seed. In this case, tho buyer of the cheaper seed actually pays at the rale of $1.20 for seven pounds of weed seed. Where do you buy your sped? You have a right to get good seed, and there is always danger in buying of Irresponsible parties. The most elaborate is that at OtTonburg, which honors Sir Francis Drake as the first man to introduce potatoes into Europe. Tile monument consists of an excel lent statue of Drake, "Vising from an elaborate base decorated with gar lands of the potato plant, with full li- iv:i tubers. Several tablets are placed about the base stating that Drake tirst brought tho potato to Eu rope, with various laudatory inscrip tions iif; to the value of the potato to civilization. A similar monument to Drake and the potato has been erected at .Muiz. As a matter of historic fact, Drake had nothing whatever to do with in troducing the potato to Europe. It Is generally supposed that Sir Walter ltll U i.t;ii was the discoverer of tho potato, and stories, are told of his appearing on. tile streets of I.o.ndon wearing a buttonhole bouquet of potato blossoms In order to attract attention to tho new vc.'.ctai.lo.
