Indictment, roturned by the Federal
grand Jury Saturday eharging tho ab
straction of funds of depositors in a
National bank and appropriating the
money to his own uho.
Defalcations totaling $18,020 are
alleged in the Government's accusa
tion. The Indictment contains eight
counts, each reciting a separate in
stance of alleged misappropriation.
Government agents, however, declare
that the abstractions amounted to
$70,000.
Sheridan was immediately ar

Judge Moan. lie was represented by
former United Slates Senator G. W.
Fulton, and Judge Dean allowed un
til Monday, March 10, for a plea to
ho entered.
Indicted at Itoseluirg.
Sheridan Is already under Indict
ment at Koschurg on a state charge
of obtaining money under false pre
tenses and forgery. Ho was to have
been- tried February Hi, but the
knowledge that the Federal grand
jury was Investigating tho case
caused the Prosecuting At torney oi
Douglas County to have the case con
tinued until the .May term.
The indictment shows that Sheri
dan appeared before the grand jury
nt his own request on February 21.
The list of witnesses before that body
shows that 2fi persons, mostly resi
dents of Douglas County, testified.
Immediately after the arreHt Sheri
dan was released under $0iMMl bonds.

HELPS TO AGRICULTURE.
Many Animals and Birds Ar Good
Friendt of tho Farmer.
rreduceouu animals and birds have
an itiiportunt function to perform In
their capacity as natural enemies to
crop destroying Insect and pests, ac
cording to the biological survey of
the department of agriculture. The
annual damage to crops by Insect and
mammal pests iu the United States
now amounts to many millions of dol
lars, which Is the result largely of the
encroachment of new Insect enemies
mid rodent pests ami the destruction
by man of the natural enemies of
these crop destroying pests.
If meadow mice weie always pres
ent the red tailed hawk would rarely
touch other food. It Is when their
normal food Is scarce that predatory
birds and animals are from necessity
forced to take what they cau find and
thus become trespassers on man's
property.
The coyote and grunt horned owl In
rabbit Infested regions and In vlne
yards, orchards, meadows or gardens
overrun by Held mice are among the
best friends of man. but on the other
hand In thickly fiettled regions com
paratively free from rabbits and mice
both have to be summarily dealt with,
us does the coyote In sections where
Hhcep raising is an Important indus
try. The mink Is Indefatigable In its
i onrch for meadow mice and other
marsh loving rodents. The weasel,
while Individually It has acquired the
poultry habit, is one of nature's most
ettlcieiit checks upon the hordes of
i meadow mice ami other rodent crop
. destroyers. The skunk renders impor
I tant service by destroying Immense
I numbers of mice, white grubs, grass
hoppers, crickets, cutworms, hornets,
wasps and other noxious forms. The
badger Is valuable In destroying
ground squirrels, prairie dogs, gophers
and e!her burrowing animals, and
farmers should bear In mind that
havtks and owls feed largely on iiox-
I luus rodents and the larger insects,
such as grasshoppers, crickets and
May beetles. There are two kinds of
.hawks that should be kept In c'leck
nauiely. the sharp skinned and Coop
or variety, which feed almost eirlrulj
on wild birds and poultry.
