The '95 Mental Culture Club will meet In social session at the club rooms Tuesday afternoon, March 3rd. The ladles are invited to bring their sewing. The farmers market day that was started last spring as an experi ment has proved a success and has been the means of getting producer and consumer together in the market ing direct of lots of produce. This was the result of agitation In some of the local Oranges nnd Or. C. H. Bailey, one of the promoters, says ha sold over six tons of potatoes di rect to the consumer, in small lots, in paper bags. The offerings at this market consist of all kinds of farm produce, such as vegetables, meat, eggs, etc., and the usual price is some above what the local dealers will pay and below what the consumer would have to pay the dealer, thus making it a good thing for all concerned ex cept the dealer or middleman and It is suggested there Is plenty of room for him out at the producer's end of the game if lie finds his present business not profitable. Dr. C. II. Ilalley, fruit Inspector of Douglas County, Oregon, says with over 15,000 acres of young apples and pear orchards just coming into bearing there is great need of better organization among the fruit grow ers In order to find the best market for their crop. He says at present there are comparatively no commer cial apple and pear orchards in bear lug In the county perhaps not over ;!00 acres In nil and that some pro vision for marketing the crop just coming on must be made. Douglas County lias long been a leader In the production of prunes and has large dryers, and, while there are lots of old family apple orchards bearing heavily, it lum been only recently that any large commercial plantings have been made. Perhaps the larg est body of new plantings have been made surrounding the now town of Sutherlln. That is really getting to be quite a little city and business center and has only been In existence a few yeat'B. Where the town now stands was a big field, and farther up the valley for many miles the land lias been subdivided into small tracts and the large part of it set to fruit This tract has been put '.lndor Irri gation by the construction of a big canal. 1 was recently talking with one of tile men that purchased a tract of tills land and now hns a good home on it and ills trees allowed a remarkable growth. 1 commented on the thrifty, vigorous growth nnd snld I supposed he found the Irriga tion water a great help. He replied by saying he found It "handy" with the house garden but so far he had never needed irrigation with the trees nnd found by thorough tillage lie was able to make a satisfactory growth. A new venture Ib to bo nindo by a number of men near Koseburg, Ore gon. They have sent for broccoli seed enough to plant 40 acres aud plan on having it on the market next year about HiIb time, lly being able to market this crop at this time of year it will reach a market that has been difficult to supply from any other source. Plants of this kind do exceptionally well there. The crop will be marketed in the Eastern and Midillo West cities through the North Pacific Fruit Distributors and the price in Chicago now Is not Ichs than 2 per dozen; and when one figures nearly 5U00 plants per acre It soon runs into money.
