Harth's Toggery HOW THE ROl'XI) VP I'l'T I'K.NIH.ETOX ON THK MAI". Putting a town on the map has always been considered a distinctly commercial undertaking, a matter to be handled by commercial associa tions, who through publicity and en couragement to manufacturers, busi ness undertaking and an enormous amount of boosting make a great noise, build up a reputation ana thru one thing and another accom- nllsh the desired object or acquaint ing the world at large with the fact that there Is sucn a piace uuu 11 hmiM ha nn tha man. That i the accepted Industrial method. Of course there are many Instances where towns have been put on the man throueh fires, cyclones, murders, riots, strikes, gold finds, and other Incidents of more or less ntieetlonabie desirability. liut perhaps the most unique and unexpected putting of a town on the map belongs to renaieton, uregon, known the world over as Round Up Town. Hound Up Town Is not a big city and never will be. It has barely emerged from the village class but It's lusty yell of "Let 'er Buck" has been heard the world over and la today a slogan which meets a re sponsive acceptation when properly delivered In any point in the world where the English language Is spoken. There now journey to the annual Round Up in the "Let 'er Duck'' Hound Up town, more people than attend any single event In the United Statca, with the posidble ex ception of the world s champion baseball games In New York or Chi cago. Sixty thousand people wit nessed tho Round Up at Pendleton Oregon, In 191.1, anil If the ratio of increnso for the four performances Is maintained for 1914, the attend ance will be 7i,000. And this taking place in a town of less than six thousand people, a county of less than 25,000. a state of less thnn one million uml a coun try which upon the maps looks like a school boy's conception of darkest Africa with Theodore Roosevelt out of It. So Round t') Town Is on the man and Let er Huck" has become good English. Mow did It happen? It whs nml Is cine of thoso peculiar pranks which fate plays upon peo ples and communities. It happened like this: Judge Fee. who was circuit Judge when the cir cuit Incliiiled the whole of Kastcrn Oregon, a stretch of territory large enough to cradle the Tlrltlsh Isles, In 1 909 lioiiKht a ranch on Wild Horse Creek from Judge Tom Halley. .lutlKe Kee slocked this ranch with a hired man and a team of work horses. One tiny he told the hired man to moil nt one of these work horses and go up In the pasture after the cows. The hired man did his very best but he never did any more than to get mounted. Judge Fee brought the horse down town and hired a man nt the price ot 15 to break that horse to ride. The man gave the five dol lars back and went to the hospital, afier wlili-h lie retired from that business. Then a person named (leni'Ke i-'li-ti-her. ciininiiuily known as "Mkkit ili'orge" on account ot his color, said he would ride that horse. The horse was taken to a little ball park where the sage brush lenKUers often i-t-osseil hats and si shooters, and quite a spi'lnkling of people wont ulong to see llenrge do It. lleoiKi' ni'M'i- did. He tried, hut 1I111I was all Then 1111 Indian named Jim Klslibiid, mini the reservation. said he i-ouUI rule Hie horse. The aiiiiiiiiiirotiiciit was made that next Sunday Jim l-'lshlurd would ride that horse. While ordinary attendance at Hie I ball games hud been an where from in coi'iMiillls guard to a couple of hundred, more tluui two thousand people crowded Hie small lot t,i see nno Indian try to ride one poor old :pliiw horse. (mhiio of the younger Kss of Hie low 11 got out their old uigobi'.is and a pencil and paper and began figar- ling out this problem If two thou sand people wilt uirii out to see one ; Indian ride one horse, bow i iatiy people will turn out to see 01, , In dian, one nigger and one while man inue uiree nurses I lie ailsvie; w a.1 registered nt the first Hound 1 p. th last week in September, r.U". a eight thousand people. I In ISUJ more than two ha.idrrd rowmtys rame to ride bin king burses slid It required more than a I indred mid fifty burking horses, worth iweniv-five thousand dollars, n pro vldo tho means whereby the iiue.-ilnn which wns first asked in Iflii eould lie answered, and it entailed an ex pense of l.l..!'t.ii to stage the lonlest for 1913. I Thtlt Is. briefly, the story ,-f how Pendleton got on the map ai.,1 ' l et , 'er Huck" became good English. To day the grand stand and bleachers at Hound l'p 1'ark will seat :.", 000 peo ple, and they are filled 10 overflow ing on the last day of the three dais' performance. i People come from all parts of the world to see ttie Hound l'p. And since that first Hound Up iu lstii. the contamination has spread until In 1913 there were Just fifty two towns, villages or communities in the West, Northwest ami Canada putting on Imitation Round I'ps. Dry slab wood Page's Is the place. What Team Work Will Do These borsea don't get anywhere because they are PULLING AGAINST EACH OTHER. Hitched together as a team they could pull a load bigger than themselves. It la tbe same way with men. Pulling against eacb other tbey get nowhere. Pulling together tbey accomplish wonders. Tbe only way to wake k town advance is BT TEAM WORK. Tbe last census shows that many American cities and villages advanced marvelous!, others almoat stood still, while others actually went bsckwurd. It Is a 10 to I bet tbat In tbe growing towns you will Bod a UNITED CIVIO SPIRIT. Tbey support a board of trade, a commercial club or some other form of organized boosting. It I Just as certain that In tbe towns standing still or going backward will be found factionalism and bickering tbo citizens pulling In different di rections. Even horse sense ought to teach men the advantage of pulling together. TEAM WORK -that's the secret of TOWN BOOMING-team work I Simple English. "Yes." said the earnest professor, "what we want In literature Is direct and simple English." The listeners gravely nodded. "Direct and simple." they echoed. 'Those conglomerated effusions of vapid Intellects." the professor went on, "wblcb pose In lamentable atti tudes as the emotional and Intellectual Ingredients of fictional realism fall far short of the obvious requirements of contemporary deuinnds and vlolute the tradltlonnl models of the tran scendent minds of tbe Ellxuliethnn era of glorious memory. Pluin and simple English Is the demand of tbe hour." WhereiiHn everybody applauded and weut home. Cleveland Plain Dculer. STOMACH I'PSET?
