To the Editor: There is an Interview publUhed in the MarfahMeld Record, and a state ment of comparison between the roads to Roseburg from Mumhfleld via. Myrtle Point and Cuinaa Valley, and from Marshfleld via. the old Coos bay wagon road; with the opinion that the latter route should be preferred in considering the pro posed Coos County roads bond issue of 14411,001), chiefly because l shorter distance, a better grade, ami of the "much better 'country t he tapped by the Coon Hay waKon road," than by the Myrtle I'oint Koseburg road. The assumed fails, as well as the reasoning of this In terview are much at variance with the real facts of the situation. As to distance, from Myrtle Point to Roseburg Is but 62 miles, and while it la 30 miles further to Marshfleld, it Is flanked from this point by a broad guage rallroaii, con veying passenger coaches, morning and evening both ways, over this 30 mile Interval. Aa to time, no other route can transport passengers and freight to Marshfleld from Uosehurg more rapidly than by .Myrtle Point. If the wagon road for the entire dis tance must be considered, it Is ad mitted to be longer than by the Coos Hay wagon route, but the natural and Impassable obstructions in that route render It longer, more unsafe and more costly for traffic than the other. Geographic distance is not an element in the case, as the old saying still remains true that "the longest way -round Is often the short est way home." As to grade, the two routes long traveled by the public speak for themselves. No disinter ested person who has ever traveled both at any season will retc::d Hint a better grade exists on the Coos Hay wagon road. The high altitude and the steep aHcent on the eastern slope of the Weekly mountain, with the abrupt and precipitous decline In the 11 miles of canyon on the western slope, with constant slides and washlngB, has heretofore and al ways will make impossible any de cent grade. The route over the (Camas Valley has now been so low jered und Improved ns to make it the only practicable uii year tnororaie. The railroad engineers found a grade which does not exceed one per cent. The further route from Camus Valley toward Myrtle Point, of about 32 miles; Is one of the most natural and easy gradeB to he found In any por tion of the Const Hange. I'or a wagon road, the Douglas County sur veyor found a grade for a hard sur face road at no place to exceed three per cent. Such a road will enable uutos to reach tide water and steam er navigation, and railroad connec tion at Myrtle Point, easily In three hours from Koseluirg. What more eould bo asked? On tile Coos liny wagon route, however much Improved, no such record cun bo made. Xo engineer and no road builder will say that It could, Surveying alone cannot low er mounlulns nor liullil lunuels. either of which would lie necessary there. Then thirdly, that a "better coun try would he tapped" by such a road. Such an assertion Is still further from the facts. From Koseburg to Camas Mountain the route passes through a continuous agricultural region, by way of (Ireen. Winstnns and llrockwuy, with Looking Class and Tenmlle valleys adjacent, anil the Olullu country also on the way. This Is one of the oldest fanning regions of Douglas County. The present excellent road pusses for four miles over the well timbered Camas Mountain, which timber when re moved will leave good tanning land. Camus Valley, 2:, miles southwest of Roseburg, Is one entire series of farms, and rrom this valley !i '., inll.-s to the Coos County line, along a water-level grade as recentlv located. Is a rich forest or merchantable lim ber which when removed will lit,,., wise afford tin immense stieteh ol fertile soil for agnculiitre.
