OAKLAND, Or., Nov. 21. Today
was Turkey Day In Oakland. At 9
o'clock in the morning the procession
of wagons, loaded Willi their precious
freight began to arrive by dojens, by
scoreB, literally by hundreds before
the day. was through. From Driver
Valley, from Hlce Hill, from Coles
Valley, from Kellogg, Trom Upper
Calapooia, from Fair Oaks the wag
ons cuiue pouring In ainuiu, each
bearing a load of from ten to 200
turkeys. From time to time a four
horse team drove up to the ware
house wilh a farm wagon piled up
to the toi of t liii sideboards and
then heaped up with 22-ceut meat.

been brought lo town.
Though Oukland has long been
known us the largest turkey shipping
point in the slate, the number
brought in today probably exceeds
auy previous Thanksgiving ship
ment. "I never dreamed there would
be so many," said tiarry Young, the
Oakland banker, who in the last 25
years has bought and shipped out of
Oakland 2uu,uuu turkeys. Hereto
fore the ordinary Thanksgiving ship-
a nuve ueeu iiooui uuuu, Wltn
about 4000 more at Christmas time,
and u few to epicures at various
times of the year. Oakland has
therefore produced this year about
fifty per cent more turkeys than
usual. The local price is 22 cents
a pound. The turkeys will nverage
above 12 pounds.
With the turkeys today there came
a sprinkling of iiogs, chickens and
ducks, all dead except tile latter,
which from their crates every now
and then lifted their voiced in sten
torian protest against the universal
death about them.
About three carloads will be
shipped out of Oakland, with an ad
ditional carload, hoimlit by Carry
Young, from Itoselmrg. Wells Fargo
& Company annually purchase i:ino
Oakland turkeys as Thanksgiving
gifts to their employes on Ibis coast.
Practically all the turkeys in the
county are bought by two Oakland
dealers Young : Company and
Bridges Brothers. This afternoon
two large warehouses were fairly
ceilinged with suspended turkeys and
their floors were covered from back
to front with heaped up crales.
These ten thousand turkeys mar
keted in Oakland represent the iir
gregate of hundreds of small herds
rather than a few large herds. F.very
bodv up and down the Calapooia Val
ley raises a few turkeys, hut nobody
overdoes it. The largest herd this
year was owned by Isadore nice, of
Itice Hill, five miles north of Oak
land, and numbered :'.''.",. A. 1.. Dear,
living one mill' north of town, had
a bunch of 2'i. There were three or
four "SO-head herds. Forty or fifty
Is the average herd.
There was no phenomenally large
turkey raised this year, l'eople tell
about the flfty-pouniler shipped from
Oakland In days gone by. No fuch
big but "tough old cubs" was brought

Approximately .10,000 pounds, or
two and one-half cars of turkeys, Is
Roseburg's share this year of the
Thanksgiving shipment of turkeys to
outside markets. This means a re
turn of about $10,r00. The ship
ments covered the past three days,
which will practically close the con
signments before Thanksgiving. The
birds are divided between Puget
'Sound and San Francisco. With the
two cars that left for San Francisco
last night went (ieorge Stearns, who
represents E. G. Young & Co., of
'Oakland, who also took n heavy ship
: ment from there.

exceptionally good, and the dealers
I have hud little trouble In buying.

from Portland, by a bare majority
thq Supreme Court today reversed
the conviction of K. S. J. McAllister
for a similar crime, and remanded
the case lo the Multnomah County
Circuit Court for u new trial.
In a dissenting opinion, written
by Justice MeNary and concurred in
by Chief Justice Mrllrhle and Justice
Kakin, the majority members of the
court are soundly scored for their
decision und for allowing the prin
ciples laid down In the case of Start,
whoso conviction was reversed, and
who was permitted to leave the
country without retrial. The ma
jority members are Justices Ramsey,
llean Moore. Burnett.
I Justice MeNary said unless the
principles laid down in the Start case
are overruled by the court, they will
remain a fruitful source of embar
rassment in administering punish
ment to those depraved individuals
affected with moral viclousness and
degeneracy.
