Their Colleague.
Just returned from a 10 days' visit
to Washington. Hugh Mrl.oln, of
Marshfleld, arrived In Portland to
day bringing a message from the Ure
(on delegation In Cong rem and prais
ing In particular the state's two Sena
tore, who bave stuck to tbelr desk,
throughout the long session, says the
Portland Journal.
"Oregon ought to be Immensely
proud of her Senators," aald Mr. Mc
Latn this morning. "They are the
hardest workers In Washington, De
plte the length and terlousness of
the present session and the extieme
beat of the past summer, they have
stuck to their desks and served the
Interests of their state. Every morn
ing they are on the job bright and
early. I was genuinely surprised to
find what a vast amount of work they
have on their hand, und more Hum
f leased to see how conscientiously
hey have performed their duties.
They have been present at all the
session, answered every roll call, and
done everything In their power to
maintain a Quorum.
"Senator Chamberlain In particular
has bad an extremely hard summer.
As chairman of the committee on
military affairs he has been unable
to leave Washington for even a day.
The present precarious Mexican situ
ation necessitates his continuous
presence In Washington to advise
with the President and Cabinet and
Army officials. This chulrniaiishlii Is
one of the most Important In the Sen
ate and It la a slKUiil honor for the
state that an Oregon man holds the
position.
One of nig Men of Senate.
"Senator Chamberlain Is one of I he
big men of the Senate nut only lie
cause of his committee positions but
because of his ability. Willi Senator
Lane he has been a power In nldiiiK
the President to push through tin
tnrlff hill and will undoubtedly be
Influential in the consideration of
the currency question.
"I spent a great deal of time with
out Senators us my business In Wash
ington was of an official nature. 1 tot ti
