8UTHERLIN, June 10. The
Thursday morning session of the 17th
annual convention ot the W. C. T. U.,
which convened In Sutherlin, opened
at 10 o'clock with the usual good at
tendance. Mrs. Jennie Kemp led a
very Inspiring devotional meeting,
which was followed by additional re
ports from the various unions.
Mrs. Harford then gave a talk on
the mission of flowers, and how they
brighten the home of the poor and
the afflicted. 8he also suggested a
number of ways that the W. C. T. U.
could do little acts of kindness.
A report of the L. T. L. was sent
by the superintendent of that depart
ment and read by Mrs. Manners.
Mrs. Jenkins, ot Wilbur, evangel
istic superintendent, gave an encour
aging report. Each union had splen
did reports from their mothers' meet
ings, telling what helpful suggestions
had been given to young mothers by
those more experienced in the rear-j
lng of children. j
A synopsis of the lecture given by
Prof. Groves at the W. C. T. U. in
stitute which was held In Roseburg
in March, was then given tor the
benefit of those who had not the
privilege of hearing this instructive
talk on the effort of narcotics on the
Bchool boy.
The election of officers then fol
lowed. A motion was made and car
ried that all white rlbboners be mude
members of the convention. Mrs.
French, Jr., and Mrs. Denny were
appointed tellers of the election.
Mrs, Ida Marsters received the un
animous vote of the convention for
county president. Mrs. Ortman. of
Sutherlin, was elected cor. secretary,
and Mrs. E. II. Duke, of Roseburg,
was elected recording secretary. Mrs.
Helen Riddle, ot Roseburg. was
elected county treasurer by acclama
tion. Mrs. Riddle was made a life
member of the W. C. T. V. A motion
was then made and carried that Mrs.
Riddle be sent a letter ot greeting
and a badge from the convention.
A motion was made and carried that
the president appoint Mrs. V. K.
Hamilton as vice president.
Noon-tide prayer conducted by
Mrs. Hrown, closed the morning ses
sion. 1
The afternoon session opened tit
1:30, when MrH. Harford had charge
of devotionals. Then followed a
paper on temperance, contributed by
Mrs. H. II. Strong and read by Miss
Ensign. This paper proved very In
teresting and helpful.
Then followed another paper on
nnti-narcotics. read by Mrs. Jowett.
This wus excellent Inasmuch as It set
forth some startling facts on the evil
effects of narcotics on the youthful
body and mind. These facts can
easily be proven by watching the
change in the moral character and
mental capabilities of the boy who
useB cigarettes, tobacco or booze dur
ing his school days.
A talk by Prof. E. .1. Ortman on
fresh air and pure food versus Intem
perance was both entertaining and
instructive as he explained how the
life of the cells of ttie body are fed
by pure food and fresh air nnd

time. We land on a noisy, bustling
quay alongside of which runs a little
one horse railway. Great ships from
most of the leading porta of the world
are tied up to the quay by their sterns.
On the other side of the broad street,
the only one In Smyrna to which this
adjective can be applied, are large
warehouse and one or two pretentious
hotels.
I'asslng through a cross street, we
come to the great business artery of
the city, the so called "Frank street,"
which has doubtless obtained Its nam
from the fact that so many Franks, a
generic name for foreigners, do busi
ness on It.
This street Is only fifteen feet wide,
and yet It is the chief business thor
oughfare of a city of a quarter of a
million Inhabitants. Two people
stretching out their arms and touching
hands In the middle could span the
street, and yet through It hurries a con
stant stream of toot passengers, dash
ing calis, stately camels, donkeys and
donkey boys, beasts of burden and
men of burden, carrying every conceiv
able article that people of the orient
or the Occident might want, for this la
one of the chief cities In the world
where cast and west meet on a com

ment during the convention. These
were adopted.
The meeting was then closed with
prayer by Mrs. Eddy; of ItoBehurg.
The evening session, which was the
last meeting of the convention, met
at the Hem Theater, the chief feature
being tho golden medal contest.
The Sutherlin orchestra gave sev
eral numbers, which added much to
he program.

the medal contest, introduced the
