(KEEN TREES AS FIRE-BREAM.
I An article recently published ad
! vi.i sting the planting of belts of
deciduous trees In coniferous forest
to check the progress of forest fires
Is thus criticized editorially In the
Mississippi Valley Lumberman (Mln-nt-apolia,
January 31):
"That the writer baaed hla as
sumption on theories la plainly evi
dent when on reaches that part of
the article which advocates the plant
ing through the main bodies of forest
lands wide strips of non-combustible
trees to act as fire-walls or fjre
hreaka. aa u meana of preventing the
spread of forest fires. The Idea of
dividing the foreat up into sections
Is not a new one, out to make this
dlvlaion by meana of a non-combustible
plant life la certainly new and
novel, but there are those who have
seen forest fires raging who will at
test that there are no non-combust-Ible
plant life that will withstand the
intensity of a forest fire. The pres
ent ByBtem ot cutting swaths through
the woods for fire-breaks la much
more effective, but the only true pre
tention of forest fires, and their con
finement, is not to let them start.
The service of the forest ranger and
the well organized fire-prevention
system based on his services are the
only true means of reducing and
eventually eliminating the losses re
sulting from fires In timbered
regions."

Portlntld Journal: P. J. Neff, of
Medford, Hogue ltivcr Valley repre
sentative on the board of directors
of the North Pacific Fruit Distribut
ors, was In Portland this morning on
lila way to attend a meeting of the
directors at North Yakima. Wash.
Through this organization, it la
hoped the fruitgrowerB of the entire
Northwest will be able to make great
economies in the sale of fruit, par
ticularly apples, avoiding the con
fusion that sometimes resultB from
Independent efforts by growers of dif
ferent districts, and bring the apple,
pear and cherry directly Into the
hands of the consumer.
The organization was formed lnst
December, but at that time little clue
was accomplished. The meeting at
North Yakima tomorrow Is to formu

proposed, however, to disturb the
local branding of each district, so
that each may retain the advantages
built up by Its own merits and ad
vertising. Mr. Neff says that so far
11s lie is aware the organization will
make no effort to fix prices.
"Our chief problem is to eliminate
waste that comes from the present
met hoils of competition.'' he snid.
"Tor Instance, Rochester Is a good

place goods there, it sometimes hap

time from Hood Itlver. Yakima and
