the battleship Oregon; but that tire
waa an exception.
Now take the livery barn fire. That
fire could have been caught in Its In
fancy and extinguished had we bail
sufficient pressure when first we
turned on the water. The lack of
pressure was caused, however, by a
defective valve gato In the hydrant
and not by poor apparatus.
At the Henry fire In the Kldd
house on Mill street, If Mr. Strong
remembers, all ot the fire apparatus
waa taken from the city hall and
drawn to the fire by hand. In the
long run of 11 blocks to tbe fire
(remember the firemen have to run
to the city hall first from wherever
they may be), a majority of the boys
became exhausted and the carts
were drawn no faster than a walk
the last three, blocks. And It should
be known Hint it is an Impossibility
for the two men on tho tongue of
one ot those heavy carts, going down
hill, to hold It back and keep It from
running over all who are pulling it.
An auto truck would have arrived
at that fire within two minutes with
everything needed, and the firemen
would not have been exhausted when
they reached it.
We nro glad that Mr. Strong ad
mits that the Hamilton houso could
have been saved to a considerable ex
tent with an auto truck. As everr
one knows, that fire originated In
tho upper part of tho house and
burned down through the house. A

checked the fire long before It was
checked, nnd with much less damage
to the house. If the reader was at
that fire let him form hla-owu opin
ion. The old mill fire waa another case
where an auto truck would have
served to irreat advantage. As It wae,
the only hydrant within reach was
more than a block away. Had Rose
burg have had an auto truck It would
have In a very few minutes been
placed within art feet of the fire, the

race, the pump started, and fear

would have been thrown on the fire
