However, aoeerdlna to the geologists of the United States Geological Hurvey and other aotnorltlea, Oregon had at one time, probably before the dawn of Ufa upon tha earth, a great volcano which towered as far above Mount Hood as doea Mount Rainier, pos sibly even several thouHand feet higher. The Noblo fir and Douglas fir are the chief tree's found on the higher slopes. The hardwoods, or broad-leaved trees such as the ouk, maple, ash and alders, occur in varying quantities throughout the Willamette Valley and on tho foothills on either side.
