ant drainage will be secured for the
whole of the upper tilades as well as
all the lower portion clear down to
the New Ulver.
An examination of the state maps
shows that on all or the canals on
the upper (Hades, at least, there Is
ample elevation for all drainage and
Irrigation purposes. When the locks
are Installed at the head gates of thc
several canals, tho state will have
gained complete control of the ebb
and flow of the waters of the lake
and (Hades. When tho work has
reached that stage of development I
there will be no more overflowing of I
inn (italics, and tho planter can cul
tivate his lands in security and with
immense profit.
At :I7 miles below the lake we
passed through the upper rock rim.
which was no doubt the original
shore of tho lake, which has been
filling up slowly by the constant de
posit or vegetable matter and sedi
mentary deposits from tho rivers
coming in from above and carried
there hy the overflow waters for
ages past. Here I noted that the full
depth of the canal was in the muck,
and Hint through the canal the water
was running very full on account of
the fact that this canal was compelled
to do double work. Still, In many
places we saw the (Jlades high and
dry Prom here on to the lake the

Shortly after dark we passed the
canal Into the lake, running up one
or two miles where we cast anchor

times full of fun, he was a pleasant
addition to our party. In passing-
allow me to say that I had forgotten
to mention one very Important thing.
There was a bed of Knglish blue
grass showing a tremendous growth.
Mr. Calahan assured us that there
was an abundant range of forage
plants, suitable for the glades, and
predicted wonderful results hy
breeding the new Knglish hog and
tho Tamworth, and the cultivation of
the Cassava, a Mexican plant said to
have a food value twice as great as
Indian corn.
After leaving the hotel we steamed
toward tho Hillshorrtw canal, going
some X 4 miles below the lake, came
to anchor and went ashore. Here the
