He served aa chief clerk of the State Senate from 1818 to 1871, and served as private secretary to Governor 8. F. Chadwick from February 1, 1(77,' to September 11, 1878. He practiced law for a number ot years in Salem and Portland before locating at Ber-, aeiey. no was a oroiuer ot me late Sam Simpson, the Oregon poet.
