ing evidence In Mr. Ilalllnger's favor.
Failure of the Canadian reciprocity
scheme was a misfortune, rather than
a blunder, for Mr. Taft made a splen
did fight for it and showed what he
could do If aroused In a cause into
which he put his heart. When bo
aslute a politician as Sir Wilfrid
Laurier was deceived as to the trend
of Canadian opinion, Mr. Taft canno:
be greatly blamed for misjudging it
But he erred egregriouBly and unin
tentionally helped defeat of reci
procity In Canada by his "parting of
the ways" speech and by his predic
tion that reciprocity would make
Canada an adjunct of the United
States.
When Colonel Roosevelt threw his
hat in the ring and made the direct
primary his battle-cry In the pre
conviction campaign, Mr. Taft blun
dered again by not offering to submit
his own and his rival's claims to the
voters. He gave Mr. Roosevelt good
cause to Bay that he feared such a
test of strength and furnished the
only real busls for the cry of fraud at
the Chicago convention. His sole
Rource of gratification In the outcome
was that he at least encompassed the
defeat of Colonel Roosevelt and saved
the country from what he seems to
have considered a worse fate than a
I if mncratic administration. I
Mr. Taft's position In public esti
mation is unique. Ills most deter
mined political foes have been won at
least to silence, and hosts of others
who opposed him are ready lo dull '
him that good, honest, well-moaning, -likahli

Renewed Interest Is being taken in
spelling In Southern Douglas County
this winter through n series of spell
ing contests which have been ar
ranged for by the principals of the
Myrtle Creek, Riddle and (ilendalu
schools.
The second contest of the series
was held at Myrtle Creek Friday
night and a large number of people
gathered to witness tho battle of
words. First came the grades con
test, consisting of six contestants,
two of the best spellers from the
sixth, seventh and eighth grades
from each school. In this contest,
Bessie Morrison, an eighth grade pu
pil of the Myrtle Creek school, won.
The high school students followed
and more than 2000 words were pro
nounced before the end was reached.
Mils Vie Rice, a Myrtle Creek
student, was victorious in this con
test, but she had u foe worthy of her
steel In Miss Jessie Swnrtz. of Riddle,
who finally missed the word "con
fusion" arter spelling nil kinds of
really hard words. The third con
test will be held at Riddle in April.
