Handicapped By Distance and loor -Kquiimirat, Klrr Department Waa Late. Fire! Fire! One mile away from the city hall a fire had burst out Id Mr. Jones' kitchen. The fire whistle blows. The members of the volunteer fire department ruBh to the fire hall and pull out the chemi cal and hose carts. If Rood lurk be with them, a large number of boys arrive at the hall within five min utes after the fire whistle sounds. Then they are off on a run to the fire, pulling those heavy. huiiKlcsome and antiquated carts. It is n fine day and everybody feels Just like run ning. Fine! In twenty minutes from the time of the alarm they are at the scene of the fire. Hut look! When the whistle blew, only the kitchen of the house was in flames; but when the boys arrive it seems past saving. Flames are Bhootlng up from all sides. The water is turned on and five streams of water are played on the burning house. In an hour or more the fire is completely out. And what Is left. A blackened, burned and unsightly shell, good for noth ing, but an eyesore to all who pass. And poor Mr. Jones. How we sympa thize with him. His home, his keep sakes, for which he would not have taken a fortune, valuable papers and Fire! Fire! One mile away from the city ball a fire has broken out In Mr. Jones' kitchen. The fire whistle blows. And hardly before It has finished blowing the automobile fire -truck dashes out of the doors and In three mlnuteB Is at the scene of the fire. "Fine, boys," shouts the chief, "she hasn't broken out of the kitchen yet, and all we need is a little of that chemical." And In less than ten minutes the fire Is entirely out. .No water; nothing ruined. And Mr. Jones' keepsakes, his furniture and his home all are saved. Stop and think! Perhaps your pome will be next. Do you want tho old hand carts to get there after the house is past saving, and leave you an ugly burned-out shell .to clear away? Or would you rather have an automobile fire truck get there be fore the fire was out of the room In which It started, and save your home, your keepsakes, your valuables? Think, think, cttltcns, is It not worth more than the cost to feel well pro tected; If you do, vote 302 X Yes for a bond issue to purchase an auto fire truck. The election will be held on Monday, March 31. PUHLICITY COMMITTEE, Roseburg Fire Department "FAdCiKlMH'T" WOMEN Will Find a Helpful Suggestion In Tills Ix-ttcr.
