The Progressive Co-operative Producers Is the name of a new organization which has been organized for the pur pose of establishing a settlement which will be different from most anything else in the state. There are now 20 members In the organization, but. inn members are desired. The purpose Is to start a settlement which will be operated along a mu tual benefit line. The society members will take up land In the Loon Lake district be tween Cons Bay nnd Scottsburg and they will not only till the soil but will also carry on manufacturing pur suits. The men who have joined are most all skilled mechanics or carpen ters. The company has purchased the McDonald sawmill at Loon Lake and will operate It. In the district there Is a large amount of hard wood, chiefly ash. maple and myrtle, and It is the Intention to turn out articles made of these woods sb well as manu facturing lumber. A co-operative plan will be used in clenring the lands and It Is claimed by Ihe members that that they will be able to clear land for f 30 an acre, whereas It would cost 1100 an acre to clear the same land under other plans. There will be a store and hotel at Ihe central point In the settlement. Regular officers of the corporation will be elected and there will be a malinger who will have charge of selling and buying products. All members who do work will be allowed good compensation but they are not to he paid In money. They can get what they want of the products and merchandise sold by the com pany and any excess credit for work will he taken nut In the shnpe of cer tificates of stork In the organization. Kach member must pay a fee of $1 a mouth to the organization hut In return the latter will take care of the diication. life Insurance and general health of the members and will pro vide attendance of a physician. One of the strict regulations is that there shall not be sold or given away any intoxicating liquors In the ft lenient. A person to he eligible must he sound of body and mind and of ordinary intelligence and practical in some line of work, either agricul tural, mechanical or business. The members of the organization believe that they have a plan which will he unite successful nnd will start on the actual settlement this summer. DI8REPVTAIU.K DISTRICT Hl'PPKKHSKD BY . MAYOR. 'Itarbary Coast," San Francisco's Famous Deadfall, Reaches Klid of Picturesque History, SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 28. There la no hope for the Marbary Coast. The "lid" will be placed upon It at midnight tonight. "The orders of the commission will be enforced," said JesBe Cook, presi dent of the Police Commission, today. They become effective tonight at midnight and will be promptly and fully carried out." Resort owners pleaded, with Mayor Rolph yesterday for the repeal of the order prohibiting tho soliciting of drinks by women on commission, and when this was refused, declared they must close their doors. Several of them have said that they will not re open after midnight, it Is stated that morn than 800 women are em ployed in the various resorts.
