Aa a result of the postal savings system, the International postal money order business has decreased 112,000,000 In the last year, according to reports submitted to the Postmaster-General. Postal authorities explain thia by saying that foreigners have confi dence In "I'ncle Sam," and regard the postal savings bunks safer than to send their earnlnga borne. During the year the aggregate amount of International money orders sent baa dropped from 1109, 000,000 to 97. 000,000. The Inter national business Increased at the rate of about $17,000,000 a year during the two years preceding the establishment of postal savings, and during the eight years previous to tlmt the normal Increase wns about 000,000 a year. Experience, has established the fact that comparatively little money deposited in the postal savings sys tem has been withdrawn from private hanks. Instead, tho system has drawn from hiding places large amounts of money put there through lack of confidence in banks or be cause little encouragement had been si von to small savings accounts. The system has proved especially val uable In communities without sav ings hanks nnd In those having large forclgn-born population.
