"Considering the remarkable short time It takes us to gel to fires, all auto truck cannot be beat," says C. A. Niles. chief of the fire department of lturllnBton, Vermont. "One night an alarm came in from box 32. which Is 1 miles from headquarters, and no better lest could ever be made by any auto or any other piece of fire apparatus. With the very heavy fall of snow that we had tH Inches) the auto reached the fire just as the men from fire station No. 2 (which is just 1 'is blocks from the lire) had their Iiobc laid. So you see for yourself the quality of the machine that we have. The auto has responded to 173 alarms to date and has never refused to start and we have no trouble witli the machine at all. About 90 per cent of our fires are extinguished with the chemical on the auto trucks, which is a record, 1 assure you. We can make 70 miles an hour on good roads, and there is no hill in the city, with the amount of snow that we now have, that we cannot ascend at a good Bpeed. On July 30, 1911, we had a call for help from Sbelburn, Vt. We responded and was just 1 1 minutes going the eight miles, which I think is very remarkable." L. A. VPPLKS IV PORTLAND MAKKfcT KKACH LOWKS'C PHICE IX MAX Y YKAIW. POHTLAND, Or., Feb. 15. -Apples now are selling at the lowest prices known in years, and they are by far the cheapest fruit in the local mar ket. In the quality of the offerings there is about the usual range, and prices run accordingly, but the aver age in the cost of the fruit is far under that of recent years. Common apples are going at retail at 10 to 15 cents a dozen, the better grades at 20 to ao cents, and fancy fruit it, higher figures, but apples of very good quality and suitable for all purposes are to be had everywhere at prices around 25 cents a dozen and at correspondingly low prices by the box. The wholesale dealers are liberally supplied with the fruit and there nre said to be immense quantities still remaining in the country, which will come into the market later In the season. The outlook therefore Is for low apple prices for months to come. PIAXO RECITAL BY MISS MACLKAX ENTERTAINS GlESTS OF INSTRUCTOR. MOTHER GRAY'S SWEET POWDERS FOR CHILDREN AVrtninK!icl(orFpvcrlNhiitH. Booth, Mrs. Fred Huyues, Mrs. 11. G, Wilson and the Misses Merle Hamilton, Maude Maclean and Stella Krohu. Miss Maclean, though hampered by a sprained wrist, gave her six piano numbers an essentially ade quate performance, Interesting and instructive. She plays with poetic fire and abandon, doing her best work in selections of romantic flavor.
