The New York Kvening Post, In Its
financial supplement at the close of
the year, states that but three rail
roads of any importance were thrown
into tho hands of receivers during

hacked by local capital, as was Mr.
Moffat t, to build a railroad of any

In this language the Post, although
it does not intend to do so, endorses
the assertion often niado by railroad
promoters in tho West that they were
prevented from financing their roads
by banking Interests In tho Kast. Just
what the I'ost calls this kind of con
trol we do not know; but to us It
looks like what Is called a trust when
applied to coal, oil, steel, tobacco and
other commodities, remarks one of
our exchanges.
Mr. Morgan says that there can
be no such thing as n money trust.
Well, let's admit that he's right, that
that isn't n good name, that all the
money cannot he tied up in the hands
of a few men. Hut when the project
ors of a railroad which Ir well backed
by local capital along tho proposed
lino of the road cannot get the capi
tal necessary to build it unless some
lOastern banking interest or railroad
endorses It, there is something wrong.
There is an Influence In control of
the development of this country
which is not good for the country. It
doesn't matter what you call it. it is

tested before Judge Malone In a New
York court recently. The Invention
was tried out In the trial of Mrs. Fan
nie Dio, a chiilrvoyaut, who Is accus
ed of having attempted to extort $1,'MM
from Dr. Samuel Tandllck of Kast Flf
ty third street.
An Important feature of the trlnl Is a
conversation which an alleged agent of
Mrs. Dio is said to have had with Dr.
Tandllck when the agent attempted to
get the money from the physician and
which was recorded n a dictograph.

courtroom, and after It was tested
Judge Malone admitted the evidence.
