UtCEMUER SUMMARY
OF COMMERCIAL CLUB.
During the mouth' of December,
191-'. the Koseburg Commercial Club
sent out mall to U05 addresses. In-
quiries were received from 30 states,
Canada and the Philippine Islands.
The largest number ot inquiries were
received frum California, Oregon and
Washington, the next In order being
Kausas, Colorado, .Minnesota, Illinois,
Iowa. Pennsylvania, Texas, Missouri and advertising departments shows
and Idaho. Several inquiries were ' excellent results and substantial

follows: 30 per cent were general, 14 I 0
per cent relative to general farming, We thank our competitors tor ad
15 per cent homesteads. 4 per cent vertising our remarkable flour bust
timber, 7 per cent poultry, 6 per ceut.ness during the auto contest and as
riillfl-iMir U nip ,.., ot.,,.1, C ,.. nanl '
fruit, t per cent truck. Ten men
asked relative to business openings,
two contractors wished to come here
to locate, three asked relative to pro
fessional locations, eight wished em
ployment in offices and five said they
were wilting to work at any kind of
labor to make a living. Three de
sired to reut farms. Quite a number
asked about railroad land, and the
usual requests for newspapers were
received.
The correspondence has Increased
materially in the last month, and
there is every indication that there
will bo a substantial number of tan.
Hies come to the Umptiua Valley dur
ing the year 1913,
During the past year ubout 22,000
pieces of mail were sent out to 14,
284 different addresses. Part of this
literature went to the Philippine Is
lands, a part to the English colonies
in the Orient, a small portion to Ger
many, France and tlreat Britain,
quite a little to Canada and the Canal
Zone, but the most of it was dis
tributed throughout thu United
States.
The states sending in the largest
number of inquiries thruout the year
were California, Oregon, Washington,
Illinois, Oklahomn, Texas, Colorado
and Minnesota.
The funds of the club do not per
mit of very extensive advertising, the
only adv. that has beeu carried thru
the year being a classified adv. In
Sunset, which has brought a large
number of replies. Thru the Oregon
Development League many names
have been secured, lo which litera
t'.ir? l'.s been pent, resulting not only
in direct inquiries, but in some cases
arousing the Int erest of tlmse nd
di'ei:s:'d to the extent that, they
visited Itor.ebure; ami selected a loca
tion for a home.
An analysis of the inquiries for the
year shows very little difference from
that of the December analysis. About
34 per cent of the Inquiries were
general, with the percentage given
above applying to general farming,
homesteads, timber, poultry, dairying,
stock, fruit and truck. About 2 per
cent of tho inquiries were not listed
under the above heads, being rela
tive to logged-off lands, alfalfa grow
ing, nut culture, or some branch of
agriculture or horticulture not rep
resented above.
The annual reports of a number
of clubs have been made. It is very
gratifying to those Interested In the
success of the ltoseburg Commercial
Club to compare these reports with
that or tho local Commercial Club,
as In every case our showing Is much
more favorable. Our club has re
tained a better percentage of mem
bershlp, and had lis affairs on a bet
ter business basis than practically all
the other clubs whoso reports are
available. Numerous old accounts
have been taken care of during the
past year, and tho financial condi
tion of tho club Is better at this time
than It has been ut any time in Its
history. Tho advertising fund has
met very favorablo support from
practically all who have been asked
to contribute to it, but at this time
there are quite a number ot our sub-
iimtinl business firms mat nave noi
been requested to sign tho subscrip
tion list, but probably win uo oeioie
the month closes.
Douglas County Is neing wen nu-
vertised thru the efforts or tno uose-
burg Commercial Club, ami mo re
sults or this advertising are becoming
more and more apparent. Those in
touch with general conditions thru
out the eastern and central portions
of the United States say that Oregon
will probably gain moro in popunuiuu
this year than she has in any other
ono year In her history. Thero Is,
therefore, every reason to continue
tho advertising work of the club in
order that Douglas uoumy may i-
celve her full share of these now-j
comers. I
Tho Canadian government has in-;
vestigated tho probable immigration
to Canada from tho United Stales
during the year 1913, and announces
that this immigration will bo in
creased, and a much more substan
tial class of citizens be attracted.
Tho advertising sent out by the
Roseburg Commercial Club and other
clubs of the state, does not appeal
strongly to the very poor man who
Is not In position to establish himself
and family on his arrival in the
West, therefore me ciass m uu-..
who are coming West at this time s

OREGON EASTERN R. R.
I CAUSES LOCAL INTEREST.
Vale People Are Encouraged Over the
Rapid Construction Work
Doing Carried On.
The people of Vale are enthusiastic
over the prospects of the early com
pletion of the Oregon & Eastern
Kallroad. In the last issue of the
Valo Enterprise the following facts
concerning tho new road are set
forth:
1 Tho Oregon Eastern will be
finished by 1916.
2 It will be the main line the
main lino between East and West;
the present" mnin line from Ontario
to Portlnnd will give trackage for
through traffic, freight and passen
ger, to the Oregon Eastern Knilrouu
(O.-W. H. & N.) from the Ontario
Junction (14 miles east of Vale), to
Portland on the north and San Fran
cisco on the south.
3 The western terminus of the
Oregon Eastern will be at Crescent,
Oregon, In the northern part ot Klam
ath County.
4 Vale will be more than a
"whistling post," Bupply and freight
terminals being maintained here, but
extensive yards will be established at
Ontnrio Junction, two miles south ot
Ontario, where the Vale cut-off, as
the Oregon Eastern might aptly be
termed, starts, on Its very direct
meander westwnrd.
6 Beyond Crescent, the Natron
cut-off, now building, will be usod for
through traffic, northward through
Eugene to Portlnnd and Seuttle, and
southward via Klamath Falls to San
Francisco.
6 Extension of the railroad now
built up the DoBchutcs will be made
to Crescent, where a geuernl division
will be established.
7 Through traffic between San
Francisco and Portland will be di
verted over the Natron cut-off, and
that portion of the Southern Pacific"
(Ilarriman) railroad now used as a
main line, on which are located Rose
burg, Grants Pass and Medford, with
the heavy mountain grades, will be
delegated to local UBnge only in the
same manner that Huntington,
Grande, linker and Pendleton will no
longer be on the main trnnscontlncn
tul or trans-stnto route.
8 Interstate traffic between San
Francisco and Spokane will go via tho
Natron cut-olf to Crescent, thence
down the Deschutes via Bend, fol
lowing the present routing up the
Columbia River after reaching the
Deschutes Junction, 19 miles east of
The Dulles.
9 Spokane and Montana and Dtt'
kota points, as well as Canada cast
of tho Rockies, will be reached via
Valo, at first over existing O. S. L.
lines to Pocatello, Idaho, and Inter by
way of the P. 1. & N. extension north
ward to Ivowlston, or up tho Salmon
River In Idaho, or via the proposed
trans-Idaho railroad across one of
the passes in the Bitter Hoot range.
