Three Mountain Divides and Many
Dangerous Grades Cut Out
liy New Route.
MYRTLE CREEK. Or.. Jan. 20.
Citizens of this place maintain that
when the time comes to establish the
route of the Pacific Highway through
Oregon, from Myrtle Creek south to
M'dtord, it should go by a different
way than the one now marked out
for it.
Jiy the present route Is It about
90 miles from here to Med ford, with
three mountain divides to pass over,
andthe grades are steep and danger
ous. Hy leaving the present Pacific
Highway at Myrtle Creek, cross over
the divide to the South Umpqua River
at Days Creek by a road recently com
pleted, follow up this stream to Til
ler and then pass over the divide in
to the Rogue River Valley by way of
Elk and Trail Creeks, the route to
Medford can be shortened 40 miles.
This road Is now open and from
Myrtle Creek to Tiller Is as good as
the mountainous portion of the Pa
cific Highway between here and
(rants Pass. From Tiller over the
divide to Trail the road Is in poor
condition, but the 8a me work re
quired, mile for mile, will make a
better road this way than can be
made between Myrtle Creek and
Grants Pass, and the grades will not
he near so heavy.
When the time cornea to beein
building a modern highway across
uregon at a cost of from $10,000 to
$20,000 a mile, this proposed short
ening of the route by 40 miles Is a
matter of no small importance.
Future travel to Crater Lake from
points north will be heavy. Should
the Pacific Highway be built by way
of the proposed Myrtle Creek-Trail
cut-off the route from Portland to
Crater Lake would be over 100 miles
shorter than by the present route.

An extraordinary case of sex con
cealment has been learned by tho dis
covery that Irene Moynahan, 18 years
old, until a few days ago a pupil at
the Victor, Colo., high BChool, is a
boy. Marshal A. H. Weinecke of La
Junta, thought the "girl" was a fugi
tive and placed her under arrest. The
marshal discovered that his charge
was in realty a boy. Mrs. Moynahan
admitted that Irene has paraded In
girl's clothes since able to walk. She
says the reason she has taken such
pains to conceal the Bex of her child
for so many years is that she was un
able to dress her In male attire. A
strange feature of the cjise Is that
the father never knew until a short
time ago that Irene Is a boy.
