President-elect Lot Q. Swetland, of
the Oregon State Holelmen'u Asso
ciation, has unnounced the appoint
ment of C. H. M. Gronvold, of this
city, as a member of the committee
on good roads.
Ueorge Hartman, aged 17, a fugi
tive from the Oregon Iteform School,
was picked up by Marshall Kenton In
this city Wednesday and taken back
to Salem. Ilurtman escaped three
days ago with two other boys, one
of whom Is young Donnelly, of this
city, committed from Portland last
Saturday. He and bis companion are
still at large,
It. L. Hill, a laborer employed on
'the ditch being excavated for a sewer
adjoining the new Umpquu Hotel,
was completely burled by a cave-In
this morning. He waB extricated after
three-quarters of an hour's work and
j taken to Mercy Hospital, where Dr.
'A. C. Seely attended him. Hill sus
tained no broken bones, but he wub
; bruised about the face, arms and
hIioiiIiIits and one of his knees wub
: painfully wrenched. Hill has been
employed at underground work near
ly all of his life and this was his sec
ond mishap of the kind. Several
years ago he was buried under 25
carloads of rock In Oklahoma, but
escaped serious Injury.
It. S. Sheridan, editor of the Boise
Capital News, who has been cited for
contempt by the Idaho Supreme
j Court for commenting on the deci
sion of the bench which prevented
the Hull Moose Presidential electors
from being printed on the ballot, Is
a former Kosebtirg man. In bis re
view of the Idaho situation in Chi
cago Tuesday, Colonel Hoosevelt
commended the stand of Kdltor
Sheridan and urged the Progressives
to stand with the newspaper man.
.Mr. Sheridan was a well known at
torney in Itoseburg before going to
Boise, about 12 years ago, and was
formerly receiver of the United
Slates Land Office here. When he
invaded the Boise field he was asso
ciated with William John D'Arcy, of
Salem, and Editor Kisher, of the Eu
gene Gunrd. Fisher subsequently re
turned to Oregon, but Sheridan re
mained in Idaho. He is a brother of
T. It. Sheridan, the former Roseburg
banker.

convicts with the purpose of escap
ing. The fire was started with oil
soaked rags, parts of which were af
terward discovered by the peniten
tiary authorities. Stanley, Huffman
mid three other convicts were found
huddled together shortly after the
fire broke out. Chapel (iuard Kisher

son was notified at once ami steps
were taken to prevent a break and
extinguish tho fire.

Taft will not go to Cincinnati and
practice law when he leaves the
White House, hut has about accepted
the Kent professorship in Yule law
school. This statement was made
tonight by a close friend of Taft who
said he was acquainted with the
President's plans.
The Kent endowment Is about $;",
000 a year and this sum, with Presi
dent Taft's present Income of $8000
a year. Is said to be regarded by him
us sutTicIent for needs of himself and
family.
