reason that we wrote letters at every!
place wo were, but Inadvertently wo
placed them in our trunk, which we
sent ahead, and later changed the
route, perhaps duo to the Turkish
and Balkan war. We left Home withj
regret, not expecting to find anything
equal to it in antinnltles, sculptures, I
historic monuments and mosaics. Ij
will not say paintings, because Ftor-j
ence surpassed In that line anything
else In the world. The frescoes in j
the Vatican, however, cannot be sur-
passed. As stated above, we left;
Home for Florence, where we stopped .
for about a week, visiting all the j
picture galleries of the Medici's and
the Pittl's and the old "bridge cross
ing the poetic Arno. We also visited
Haute; home and the church in
which he was married. It Is the same
today as It was then. We stood on
the spot where Savonarola was
burned on the public square for be
ing over patriotic. We have seen so
much In Florence that a special let
ter, if you will permit us, will be
sent to you In due time.
From there we came to Venice, the
beautiful: lovely and inspiring Ven
ice. We seen red moms in t h e old
Ducal Palace, facing St. Mark's
Sri mi re, a" that every morning wo
ronlil witness the beautiful sight, the
feeding of thousands of pigeons by
the tourists of every country in the
world; a scene exclusively Veultinn
and never to be forgotten. We
visited the Doge's palace with its
prisoners, saw the mouth of the Hon.
where I deposited by visiting card. I
charged no one, however, with any
crime of treason or any other crime,
as was the custom in the days when

ered the virtues of patriotism. We
also stuod on the Bridge of Sighs;
on one hand the palace, on the otiHT
the prison. It looks more poetical
in print than in reality.
We did not forget to see and cross
the "Klalto," where Shakespeare
laid his scene in the Merchant of
Venice, and according to its sur
roundings it is the same market
place, with the same rich stores, and
the Veniiian gondolier sinus the
same old songs as when lago loved
Desdamona. A separate letter has
also been written nbout Venice,
which, with your permission, will be
sent to you.
From Venice we came by steamer
to Trieste, from which place we in
tended to go to the Levant, hut the
declaration of war by the Italkan
states changed our plans. We were
compelled to abandon further ad
vance in that direction. In the latter
part of October we attempted, on the
steamer Prinz Hohenlohe, to reach
the seat of war. ,
It takes from Trieste to Cattaro.
Montenegro, about sixteen and one
half hours, along one of the most
interesting coasts seen anywhere.
Cattarro Is just opposite Scutari,
where a fierce battle was fought be
tween the Turks and Montenegrins,
aud It is now reported that the city
and its forts surrendered to Mon
tenegro.
On reaching Cattaro we were in
formed- that further advance would
be dangerous. With other passen
gers we returned aud stopped at
Zara, the capital of Hal matin, and
within a few miles of Bosnia,
Zara Is a very interesting place oi
about thirteen thousand inhabitants
and thoroughly Italian in character.
It Is a busy, lively place, to which
the costumes of the Croatian peas-
nuts impart an interesting air of
variety.
This little city was strongly forti
fied during the days of the ancient
Roman Empire and on Its fall it was
occupied by the Venitians, and its
past influence can yet be seen on
every hand. The famous Winged
Lion is shown on every square aud
ancient building.
One of the most interesting and
cruel sights was an old Corinthian
Column, crowned with a griffin. It
was used as a pillory. You can still
see the chains where the criminal
were tied and publicly executed, it
reminds us very much of the cruel
ties perpetrated at the castles of St
Angelo at Home.
After being much pleased with our
trip along the coast, ga.ing at in
Lervals at the Austrian fortifications,
we reach eil Pola, the chief naval
station of Austria, where we counted
at least twenty war vessels and as
many torpedo boats. This city, wit
a population of 3 (1 ,000, was, under
the Roman Empire, a most important
war harbor of the Adriatic. In the
eleventh century Pola was taken by
the Venitians and afterwards had
much to suffer In the struggle with
Genoa. Since 181 r It has been under
the supremacy of Austria. Judging
from its monuments, this city must
have been In a flourishing condition1
in the first three centuries of the
Christian era. We baw the magnlfl
cent Temple of Augustus, erected In
19 13. C. and It is still lu an excel
lent state of preservation, und which
would be u credit to old Koine, and
is greatly admired.
The most striking Roman monu
ment in Pola Is the Amphitheatre, it
having had a seating capacity of 20.-OOd,-
It was erected in the third cen
tury. It is also in a good stale or
preservation. After seeing all we
wished wo returned on the steamer
bound for Trieste. The day wai
warm, but the sen was quite rough.

County Tax mid Household. Amend
men Is Win Out.
SALEM, Or., Nov. 19. That the
Income tax amendment to the con
stitution lost Instead of hnvlng car
ried, as previous reports would in
dicate, is shown by official figures
received here for all but Malheur
County. The amendment will lose
by about 300 votes, the returns from
Malheur County, it is certain not be
ing able to overcome this lead of the
negative vote.
Only two of the tax reform meas
ures have carried. One is the repeal
f the county tax amendment of 1910
anil the other the household amend
ment. The household exemption amend
ment makes the law stand as it has,
with the exception that the follow
ing paragraph is added to the list of
exemptions:
"All household furniture, domestic
fixtures, household goods and effects,
notnally In use as such in homes and
dwellings: also all wearing apparel
watches, jewelry and simllnr person
al effects actuajly In use."
