in the Circuit Court this
morning and behaved himself
throughout the entire proceedings.
Taking of evidence was completed nt
1 1 o'clock. District Attorney Drown
made his opening argument to the
Jury In fifteeu minutes, and no lon
ger time was consumed by Attorney
W. W. Cardwell in presenting the de
fense's side of the case. Hrown
made his dosing argument this afler
noon. Then judge Hamilton deliv
ered Instructions to tho jury and they
retired to deliberate on a verdict.
Just before Cardwell closed,
Mooney j-eached to the collection of
trial e'xbiis for his box of sodium
bromide and after securing It walked
unsteadily from the court room on
the arm of Sheriff Qulne. This was
I ho only evidence which he gave of
physical trouble during the entire
forenoon's session.
Love Tales Amuse Crowd.

the court room yesterday, there was
a big crowd of spectators on hand at

of further excitement. Mooney fur

was highly entertained by the love
tales told on the wiluess stand by

band of the IS-year-old prosecuting
witness, mid the Indignant denials by

story told in tho Justice Court here
five months ago, when Cray was ar
raigned on a charge of obtaining

Gray declared that he had at one
lime been engaged to marry Mrs.
Settle, but he later fell In love with
Ktllel Metcalt. Whereupon, he said,

California and forget the girl and
await Mrs. Settle's coming to marry
hlni. After leaving Oakland, he said,
he telegraphed for Miss Melcalf to
join him In Portland and when Mrs.
Settle found this out she trumped up
a charge against him lo prevent
Cray's marriage to the girl.
During the recital of Cray's love
escapade, the court room listeners
laughed repeatedly, until Judge Ham
ilton enjoined silence. When Mrs.
Settle went on the wiluess stand, she
emphatically denied ever having been

Placed on the witness stand, Mrs.
Ethel Metcalf-Gray said Bhe eloped
with Mooney because he told her the
authorities were going to send her to
the reform Bchool, and further that
he was her fiance's brother, Intending
to secure Frank's release from jail
so that he could Join them In another
state and marry Ethel.
Her head bowed In shame, the girl
admitted relations with Mooney from
the night they eloped until they were
arrested In Astoria. When Mooney
took her to Paddy Lynch's dive she
objected to staying there, she said,
and Mooney told her she didn't have
to stay there If she didn't want to.
This, however, was after Lynch told
Mooney that the girl could not be
come an occupant of the place.

In his argument to the Jury, Card
well declared that Mooney was paid
by Mrs. Settle to spirit Ethel away
hi order that she (Mrs. Settle) might
have Gray for herself.
"Mooney didn't know any of the

Darling, aged 74 years.
Deceased was a resident of Eugene
and was stricken with paralysis some

for. He served as n member of Com
pany E, 10th Michigan Cavalry, nnd
was n member of .1. W. Geary Post.

the laborites today that John McNa
mara declared that people often
stopped him on the streets and re
marked on the frequency of dynamit

witness to buy 120 quarts of nitro
glycerine at Portland, Ind. He said
he took the explosive to Muncle and
concealed It In a vacant house. Later
he brought It to Indianapolis and

tiiat Klainli Pusha, Grand Vizar of
Turkey, has made a direct appeal to
King Ferdinand of Uulgaria for an
eight days' armistice with a view to
opening direct negotiations for peace,
hns been confirmed.
Tills decision seems to show that
Turkey has little hope of being able
