For several years some poultry keepers have been feeding mustard to Increase ecg production. Experi ments carried on in England have shown that hens fed mustard laid more eggs than those not so fed. The first mention of mustard as an egg tonic which I remember to have seen made by the late A. V. Meersch, In the Western Poultry Journal. I had tried pepper, which at the time wa universally recommended and which is still fed to a considerable extent, and became well convinced that all the pepper fed to the hetiB has never produced one egg more. At limes u little pepper as an appetizer may be good nncl It adds flavor to an otherwise Insipid mash, but It has no Influence on egg production other than to Increase the appetite and con sequent health of the birds, while too much acts directly opposite and Is Injurious. Shortly after reading Mr. Meorch's mention of mustard I saw a reference to tests being made in England and thought perhaps there" might be something In it. It happened that at the time 1 had a bunch of rather backward pullets. As these were of little vulue 1 determined to test It out on them, so 1 commenced ad ministering regular doses in their moist mash. The result was magi cal. Their combs reddened and they I begun to sing and shortly to lay, and they laid well all during the winter, i T n...o,., r.1 ,.tt I.in, nn.l I would not feed it to more valuable fowls, as I am eternally opposed to doping or drugging fowls. To my surprise the pullets gained In vigor and growth and the relapse I looked for did not cuine. This was more than ten years ,-ago. Since then I have made occasional experiments with mustard In some of which I In corporated It with other stuffs which supply the minerals needed in the production of eggs. On account of the expense 1 did not tise It to any great extent, but when I have used It I have always noted marked benefits to result, not only In the matter of Increased egg production, but when fed to growing stock and maturing pullets. When fed to breeding stork their vigor seems tit be Increased nnd the eggs come highly fertile, and they are not only fertile hut they hatch strong chirks. Tills led me to believe that mustard Is not a stimulant to the hens but a mild tonic which invigor ates the egg production organs and produces a healthy condition. Sick hens seldom lay nnd anything which will Inrrense health will Increase pro duction, providing the hens are of the laying sort.. The hens like It and that would seem to Indicate that.
