The to tal of 283 gave the Democrats 65 more than the 218 necessary for a majority and 53 more than the Democratic membership in the Sixty second Congress. Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, president of the Na tional Woman Suffrage Association, was exuberant today as the reports came in of the big suffrage victories of yesterday, when four out of five states voting on woman suffrage ac cepted It. She said: "This is glorious. Now we hold the balance of power in Presidential elections. The political parties can not ignore us longer: they realize the importance of a woman's vote, and In order to win our friendship they will fight for us in- the states which have not yet given us the vote. "I am going to send my flag down to Tiffany's this morning and have four more diamonds put in it, mak ing ten altogether, one for each of our suffrage states. - You know about the flag? It is an enameled brooch and was given to Susan B. Anthony bv the women of Wyoming on her 80th birthday. At that time there were only four diamonds in it Wy oming, Colorado, Idaho and Utah. Since then we have added two more Washington and California and now today1 we have thlB great pleas ure of setting in It four more dia monds for our new victories. This is a happy day for us all up here and there are going to be many more such davs in the near future. "I am jubilant over the election of Mr. Wilson.
