Samuel U. Jllythe, writing In the current Ihhiid of the Siitunlay liven ing Post, gives the following smn nmry of the result of Ills InvextlKU tlons aB to the probable outcome of tho present I'ruslrientliil campaign: Superficially thero appears to be much noise and excitement and clam or about this campaign, but' It Is the noise and clamor and excitement of the claque. It is noise made by pro fessional nolKcmakers. enthusiasm Incited by professional frenzymakerH. in reality the people are sick and tired of politics. They have had election after election In most state continuous ngltation; have been oppressed by a Congress that has been almost constantly in session for flve years. They arc weary and bored. They want to attend to busi ness and they are attending to busi ness. It is true that a big attraction on the slump can get a big crowd, but so can any big show got a bin crowd. It Is the spectacular part of It that attracts moHtly, not the at tendance impelled by politics. The business men have thrown the whole thing overboard. Iluslness Ib good and getting better. Money Is plenti ful. The crops are enormous. The general attitude Is: "Uo away and don't bother ub. We'll vote in No-1 vember and we'll vote as we pleaso. ...... t...t,iw. ..... Ir. tw.ttiu.. ,1,1th you and your politics. We've had too" much of It lately, anyhow." These people know how they are going to vote and nobody but thwii selves knows or can find out. They are dispassionate about It. Nobody but the professionals Is excited; no body has any fears Tor Ibe Itopubllc. Practically everything Is set now. You find a certain proportion of the sup porters of Roosevelt and the third party running about and making noises, and there are certain llenio crats In every stale who are beating their tomtoms. The Taft men are having little to say. Hut outside of these artificial disturbances there is no excitement and no tumult. Tho country Isn't ull torn up: the country 1b toned down. A certain definite conclusion has been reached. It was reached two years ngo and more, In tho largo part, and It hasn't changed any. Chalices of a Landslide. That conclusion will bo put Into operation In one or two ways: Kllher tho great silent vote of the country fur more silent this year than ever before, notwithstanding the noisy symptoms here and there will, on election day, decide thut tho best re sults for the country enn be attained through the election of Wilson and will elect Wilson; or It will decide that the country needs lloosevelt again for President and will try to elect Itoosovelt. If the decision Is In Wilson s favor Wilson win ne biucicu hands down. If the decision Is In favor of ItooRevcIt tho election may ho thrown nuo mo iiouhe m u'-i'e---aentatlves, because there may be, and probably will be, enough old-line Ite publlcans lo Kluud by Taft to prevent Itoosevell from gelling a majority In the electoral college, even If lloose velt should curry some slates, as he probably will. There Is one more contingency that Is, there may he a landslide for lloosevelt. If there Is a landslide cor anybody thnt landslide will he for lloosevelt. Wilson's election will bo brought about, If It Is brought about, by the loyalty of the Demo- ......... n.,.l iw.nuiiuH nlil-line Ho- ClUlll. iuij tutw " "" publicans vote for hlni ns a measure of retaliation against Itoosevelt. Price 20c Krohn's Drug Store Muccabcc Temple, 325-327 Cass St, Roseburg, Oregon Whatever the Wilson result la, how cvr greut If it Is great at all It won't deserve to be called a land Hlldi?, for It will bo a coldly calcu lated rt'tiult, both on the part of the MeinocralB who, In ordinary times, wouldn't voto for him because he 1h too radical or not radical enough, and on tho part of Republicans who couldn't bo induced to vote for him t'xeept on the one theory that voting Tor Wilson will kill off Kouscvult. IT Itoosevelt wins It will be a land slide brmiKht about by the spirit of unrest, the demand for readjustment of political and economic conditions, tho desire for a chango and tho pro- tint that shaped itself, to a degree, in the nomination and the campaign of the third party. There will be nothing coldly calculated about that. It will be an uprising, a tidal wave.1 This article was written In mid-1 September. It was written after per-( sonal Investigation impartially con ducted in the states of Washington,' Oregon, California, Utah, Nevada, Idaho. Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Missouri, the Ua kotas, Wisconsin, Minnesota. Iowa,' Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan audi the Southwest. It Is based on what I found in these states, uninfluenced by any situations or conditions that may exist east of Ohio, for I had not been east of Ohio slnco July first. It is based on information concern ing conditions that exist now, not on conditions that may exist next No vember. Revolution Tinier Way. As a result of these investigations, I have reached these conclusions: Tlist Mr. Roosevelt's nomination makes the defeat of Mr. Taft almost certain. Sec .ml Mr. Roosevelt's nomina liou makes tile 'lection of Mr. Wil son prnbuble. Third M r. Roosevlt In ninny of the- stateH mentioned will get more votes than Mr. Taft, the percentage running generally about sixty per cent of the old Republican vote for Roosevelt nnd forty per cent or less for Taft. Fourth The reason Mr. Taft's vote may be less than forty per cent Is found in the fact thnt many old line Republicans who ordinarily would vote the Republican ticket wilt vote for Wilson on the ground that tills will be a vote against Roosevelt Instead of half a vote, as would be the case if I hey voted for Taft. Fifth The only apparent defec tions from the normal democratic vote, in favor of either of the other candidates, are defections that will favor Mr. Taft because of religious and racial differences. Just how far these will go Is uncertain, though great pressure is being brought by t ho peiKons who control these Influences. Sixth -The election of Mr. Rooae lt, or sufficient success ou his part to throw the Presidential election in to Congress, is not at nil improbable. Seventh Now, at this writing, Mr. Taft is the strongest in I'tah, Wyom ing and Michigan ; M r. Itoosevelt Is ihe st rouges! in California, Nevada, Idaho and (tie Uakntas; and it is a tight between Wilson and Roosevelt in the oilier stales, with Wilson hav ing the lend, except perhaps lu Wash ington, owing to the sjdil in ttie Re publican vote and the apparent soli darity of I bo Democratic parly. Tho apparent sllnaiion Is. as tills is written. Ilia! Wilson must hold what lie seems to have In unlet to win. and Rnnsevclt must make gains In various Mates If lie is tn win tu t his seel ion of I he ruunt ry. This conclusion seems simple and Justi fiable and logical. The very simplicity of It nnd the obvious logic of it are what make it merely an assumption at tills time. As I have pointed out In this and tu my previous articles, there Is abso lutely no basis for any political logic in tills campaign. New conditions exist. A revolution Is under way. Vtiu cannot measure this thing with a trV'Si-uaro or lost It with a plumb- line. Millions a good many millions of men in this country are going to the polls on Tuesday, November fifth next, to vote not from party obliga tion or al parly behest, but for per sonal. Independent . Iudi itlual, col) st rue live reasons. Many Republi cans it Is too carlv yet lo say how man v, but t liousamls of t hem - will ole t lie IViiiiicratie ticket for the first time lu their lives. Many - a great many former Republicans will vole for a third party ticket, a ticket 'hat already means the dentil of the old Republican party us such. There is no hnMs for Judgment ex cept one. That is this: The demand lor n chiiime in existing conditions Is widespread. It is insistent. There will be a change there is no doubt of that. What sort of a change it will lie depends on the ultimate de cision of t he voters as to whether the machinery lo help bring that change about shall be given over to t tie I letnoerat . Wilson, or t lie 1'ro mvssUe candidate. Roosevelt. Two years from now there would he little doubt as to the result in such a cam paign. This year there may be enough indecision on the part of the oters to make the result Indeter minate may be, I h.ild. This prob ability favors Wilson, but even if Wilson fs elected that means nothing but the temporary post poneuient of the Inevitable readjustment of the polities of Ibis country along radical and eonseratle lines. X. V. HERALD'S FORECAST SHOWS WILSON WINNER. The New York Herald National political can v una was a great surprise to many In the country. It is the greatest political poll ever under taken, caused by the mixed condi tions In the country. The figures show a drift to tbe Democracy throughout tho entire United States. a great loss to tbe Republicans and j a tremendous Progressive vote. This, canvass shows Wilson In the lead, with Roosevelt second, in nearly all of tjie states polled. The New York Herald's Investigation 3G days before the election demonstrates that the Democrats at this time are united In all sections, the Progressives fight ing aggressively and desperately and the Republicans apathetic. The Em pire State Is now swinging toward Mr. Wilson; Pennsylvania Is being bitterly contested, and the Baltimore nominee also leads in New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and In most of New England, besides having the solid South. Spectacular fights are on In Indiana and Illinois, with Wilson leading in Indiana and the Hull Mooser a close second, while In Illinois the straw ballots give Roosevelt the lead. The Northwest, where the great army of new voters. In Washington numbering 200,000, mostly women, makes the situation Interesting. They are regarded as friendly to tho Third Termer.
