Nearly $20.or0 has been recovered by the poveruiiHMit from Philadelphia sugar companies as the result of the lnvestlKutiuu into the sugar frauds. Tho entire Hhurtugu lias been made good, and since no criminal intent on the part of olliciula of the company has been found there will be no prosecu tions. . This announcement was made by Act ing Secretary of the Treasury Curtis following a conference on the subject with Attorney General Wickorsh:: ;n. In a statement it wuh Bald the investi gations into them) frauds, which htivt been conducted for more than a year by the two departments, are now at an end. The investigations, which went back over the records for seventeen years, disclosed claims against the Philadel phia sugar companies for losses to ;m customs revenues, which were causi -i for the most part by the short weigh ing of Imported raw sugar and by Il legal collections of drawbacks upon im portations of sirups. These claims have been settled by payments Into the treasury and by re leases. The W. J. Tho Franklin Sugar Refining com pany included In Its settlement the claims against itself and the Spreckels Sugar Refining company, both compa nies having operated virtually as one under the bo called trust Tho findings of the grand Jury failed to show evidence that the oillcers or directors of any of the company or any of the higher officials in the customs service were participants in the frauds or that there wns any bribery of gov ernment weighers. Tho frnuds are ac counted for largely because of lax dis cipline. This, according to the treasury de partment statement, made it possible for tho refinery employees to get t lie better of the government agents.
