Harr, victim of the automobile murder on September 17, was invited to become a party to a plot to rob a man of $2j00 and that when he declined, tho plotters killed Harr because they reared he would expose them, was the sub stance of the tip, which caused De tective Andrew Vaughn to go to Seattle, and arrest Tom C. Maxey :and flvo others, according to Infor I mation given out by tho Portland detective bureau Wednesday. The name of Vaughn s informant was withheld by tho detectives. Maxey was subjected to itn examination by tho authorities. He gavo a general account of his whereabouts Blnce September 1, stating that until to day he had not been in Portland for six years. Charges that a Deputy Sheriff of Crook County had received money to allow gambling to contlnuo nnd liciuor-selliug to thrive In dry terri tory; that Sheriff llalfour himself was seen drinking in a blind pig with others; that the Sheriff has allowed the law to bo violated without moles tation and that one of his deputies has been in league with the violators of the law, -are among the allega tions which havo been made to Gov ernor West by citizens of Crook County. All of the allegations, let ters and telegrams which have been received by the Governor In tho mat ter of Sheriff llalfour havo been turned over to Attorney-General Crawford with Instructions to the Attorney-General to investigate and tako such proper steps as ho sees Tit.
