We engaged a second class coach on the train for Koine, which we deemed unite good, for there is every modern accommodation desirable. The fact is, second class in Italy Is quite as good, If not better, than the first clars In the I'nited States. The day was warm, hut we had no time to think about It, for wc en joyed our trip so much that we were oblivous of everything except the rich vineyards, olive orchards, sugar-cane plantations, old castles, soma built even before the walls of Koine, others during tho feudal times, and most of them are in a fair state of preserva tion. These castles were many times on the crest of a hill or at the foot, and tho same are surrounded by many smaller houses, forming a vil lage; a mu to reminder of the old feudal days when "strength was might." Along the line of the rail road a few modern towns have sprung hi of more or less import ance. The country being very old, tho soil used for agricultural pur poses has lost much of its original strength, but It is surprising to see the crops that this impoverished soil Ib still able to produce. Before arriving in Rome a bit of ruined acqtieduct in tho plain tells you that you are in the rich yet pesti lence breeding Campagna, and the landscape acquires a new Interest. Slowly the train seemed to us to be creeping toward Koine, and at last wo arrived, and we were plunged tnto tho nolso and confusion of a great modern railway terminal. The Im pact of all that modernity is so sharp and abrupt, after you have been thinking that Home is nothing hut an ancient and dormant city, that If you are at all sentimentally given, It may well bring tears to your eyes. The cries of the cab men, the solicita tion of hotel porters, the clangor of t raiiicars In the Piazza del Tonne, outside t ho railroad station, over whelm and slab you with pain. Settled In our hotel, our first act was to engage a carriage to drive us to St. I'elers and to see tho Tiber. As we reach the Tiber and crossed the beautiful stone bridge that spans it. we were very much disappointed that a little rivulet like that should be dignified by the name of river, yet It is perhaps the best known river In tho world, on account of the his torical part It played. We were then wheeled Into the IMuv.za of St. I'eter, tho two great eolouades on either side seemed to tako us into a vast hollow embrace, llko Home giant's arms, ho large they cannot grasp you. The emptiness of the space before the Cathedral seems strangely disappoint lug. Wo looked at the two fountains, at tho obelisk in the center, which once stood in Nero's Circus, which we admired. Hut the emptiness of the great square made us pensive. That obelisk which has seen so much grandeur come nnd go, both In llellopolis, Its ancient home, and here in Home, which has seen races, and gods and religion flourish and pass- is It going to wit ness another transition, another change? The living present, however, reminded us that wo were standing bi'fure the greatest church in all Christendom, We returned to our hotel to wait till ininuiug to visit the Cathedral of St. I'eter.
