SALT LAKE CITY, Sept. 19. Bingham Is practically the Bcene of a slate war today. The whole camp is convulsed by a struggle between .1000 striking miners of the Utah Copper Mining Company and that corporation. Foreign strikers are digging trenches, throwing up breast works and throwing out lines of arm ed pickets. Desultory firing has oc curred all morning, but no casualties are reported. Sheriff Sharp has 250 armed depu ties. Ho threatens to charge the miners and attempt to drive them from their position. Governor Spry has refused to call cut tho state troops till ho has personally Investi gated the situation. He and the Na tional Guard officers wont to Bing ham today. The strikers today cap tured the powder house of the Utah Construction Company and took away a ton and a half of dynamite. De struction of the camp Is feared If the miners are attacked or if the company attempts to employ strike breakers. The strike Is for a horizontal In crease of 25 cents a day. President Moyer of the Western Federation of Miners opposed the strike until niter efforts wore made to settle the dif ferences by diplomacy. An alien element consisting of Austrlans, Italians and Bulgarians, who out numbered the Americans, were In sistent upon the walkout. The strik ers are determined that no one shall enter the mines or the buildings un til their demands are granted. President Moyer and other officials conferred this afternoon with Gov ernor Sprv. It Is reported that two deputies compelled Moyer to attend the conference. Militiamen have been notified to be ready to move to IUngham If they are called. At 4 o'clock Bowers was still trying to furnish bonds. Tho prosecuting witness In the case Is Bernlce, tho 10-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Harpster, of this city. According to the slory told by the girl, Bowers, who Is a total stranger to her, met her by chance on the street shortly after the noon hour today and Invited her to ride with him In the buggy which he uses In traveling about the country selling sewing machines. Relieved of 14 ounces of hair which she had swallowed a little at a time since last November, Virginia Field, a 11-year-old girl, Is resting easily In a Los Angeles hospital and practically sure to recover. The girl was Injured by a fall last November. Thereafter she suffered from a ner vous atfoction that caused her con tinually to bite her hair. In this way, her stomach was gradually filled with broken strands of hair and several days ago she was taken violently ill. A pearl breastpin, which 18-year-old Olga Martin, of New York, swal lowed while hastily dressing for a party two years ago, was removed from the girl's lungs. The pin was located by X-rays and removed with forceps. The breastpin which sho had placed between her lips while fastening hen collar, accidentally slipped down tho wind pipe.
