Near tho How Kfver, not far from the eastern foot of the Rockies, is Calgary, a rapidly grow ing city of upwards of 40,000 people.! Here several railway lines diverge, ' reaching to Kdrnonton and various parts of the great Alberta wheat dis tricts. About 180 miles further on the How Itiver passes Medicine Hat, a thriving town of SfiOO. This Is the main junction point of the Soo-Pacific Hallway Hue from Spokane. Here an abundance of natural gas gives the town the cheapest light and fuel, so they claim, of any place in the world. Advantageous climatic conditions make this a successful fruitgrowing district. From here the How River trends to the northeast and about 90 miles further joins the Red Deer and Saskatchewan. Thence its waters finally enter tho northern part of Lake Winnipeg, more than 700 miles beyond. This river is navigable to Medicine Hat and above. "Sunny Alberta" was as expected, excepting that the sky was overcast and the sunshine was missing. A cold wind made overcoats appreciated all day. Nearly alt the fields of grain were cut, but only a few threshed. Crops range from fair to good. At Swift Current heavy rains had re cently fallen and some damage had resulted.
