J. H. Safley and wife, who for
Beveral years resided a few miles
north of Drain, but for the past six
or eight years have lived near Albany,
came up last week to visit with their
son, John Safley, and family who live
two miles north of town. Mr. Safley
reports that with the advent of the
Oregon Klectric Railway In his home
town, business was lively and that a
three days' celebration of the 4th
of July Is in prospect.
Grandma Burnett, wife of our
townsman Jas. M. Burnett, is re
ported seriously ill at the home of
her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Andy Hargau, seven miles be
low Elkton.
Among those attending the rose
festival in Portland lust week from
Drain were PoBtmuster C. E. Hasard,
Mrs. WuUer Kent and two daughters,
Uloda and Bona Belle; Mrs. Anna
Drain, C. V. Sanders and Lester Wim
berly. They all report a great show
although the festivities were marred
somewhat by the rain.
Little Miss Vivian Ishnm, of Grants
Pass, has been visiting the past two
weeks with Drain relatives and visit
ed the rose show In Portland with
her cousins, El odd and Bona Belle
Kent.
A. R. Haven has sold the Bartlett
place of 19 acres, north of town, to
Richard Laesseh, the local painter
and paper-hunger.
Mrs. G. V. Wimberly, of Roseburg,
who visited here with her husband's
parents sinco last Sunday, returned
home on Thursday morning.
The present is the first season in
the history of the town that grass
has been cut on the vncant blocks
about town for hay, occasioned by the
ordinance preventing stock from run
ning at large.
A gentleman and his wife, whose
names we have not learned, have ar
ranged to start a bakery here in the
near future, which Is and has been
for some time, a much needed enter
prise. Unusual interest was manifested
in the annual school election here
last Monday afternoon. There has
boon rumors afloat that an effort
would be made to cut the high school
grades out of the school. Friends of
the high school were on hand in
sufficient numbers to prevent such
an occurrence, the vote being more
than two to one In favor of main
taining the high school nt the same
standard at which It has been run
ning, with three teachers in the high
er grades and four in the lower. A
seven mill tax was voted, tho same
as last year. Lee Barker, whose terra
had expired, was elected for one year
to fill the unexpired term of Geo.
Wei don, who had removed from the
district.
The automobiles have been put on
the stage line run again, after a
week's layoff on account of rain.
Eugene Joslyn left last week to
look after his property interests near
Hedlnnds. Califoria, and may he ab
