A co-operutive meat-packing plant
to provldo consumers in Portland
and San Francisco with meat and
meat products at wholesale- prices
will be launched this week at Ash
land, Or., by a number ot prominent
capitalists of Southern Oregon, in
cluding Benton Bowers and Georgo
Owen, of the Rogue River Vallev.
, and w. A. Shoemaker, of Ashland.
Work will be begun at once on a
plant to cost $300,000, fully equipped
for the handling of all kinds of meats
and their by-products, and it is ex
pected the concern will be ready to
jomuience shipments early in the
lall. Half of the stock has been sub
scribed in San Francisco and the
other half In Portland. Meat depots
will be established in each of the two
cities at which the stockholders can
secure fresh meats or any of the meat

These depots will be supplied direct
ly from the packing plant.
A new enterprise has been started
in Curry County. William Hunter
and J. L. Reynolds are engaged lit
gathering and canning mussels and
will put them on the Portland mar
ket. If they find that the product
takes with the nubile tho imci,wuC
will he carried on in a large way, asj
uit'ie ate enormous mussel beds
along the Curry County coast.
Despite the fact that every Sheriff
in the statu has been appealed to to
apprehend William Penn White, the
Marshfield convict, who escaped from
state's prison last week while work
ing In the brickyard, no trace has
been secured. He was guilty of man
slaughter, his crime consisting of
slaying his step-father.

Oregon's lawmakers next winter
will be asked by the Anti-Saloon
League to enact a law withdrawing
from the County Courts the right to
grant licenses for the sale of liquor
in the country districts of the state.
Under the provisions of the home
rule law enacted by the voterB under
the initiative two years ago. county
local option elections cannot be held.
By the law, incorporated towns are
exempted from the provisions of the
original local option law and are left
to determine by vote whether liquor
licenses shall be issued.
The anti-rum forces are expecting
the liquor people to call electlous in
Roseburg and Grants Pass and pos
sibly others of the principal cities
which are now without salooni
Roseburg and Crams Puss are dry
by reason of the county vole, which
was against the saloon.
In the same election, the two towns
voted wet, but they were outvoted in
the country districts.
