There was no tiote of discord anywhere, or at any time, during the couk''"- Speaking of the congress today Mr. Ouryea Haiti: "The keynote of all the discussions was necessity of developing oar nat ural resources along right lines. The chief work to he done hy the North west Development League Is the placing of men upon the soil and therehy Increasing the production of our natural products. Farm life was discussed in all its phases, llnw to help the farmer; how to si art. hiin right; how to assist In getting the hest results from his work; how to make life in the rural districts more attractive and therehy Induce more men and women to leave the congest ed cities and get out into the freedom of the country. All these things were discussed. The Amerlciin Northwest needs farmers more than It needs any other class of men. We have more people In the cities now thiiu In the country, and our great problem is how to get men at work on the millions of acres of productive soil that are waiting to he tilled. Itiiild up the country first the cities will take care of themselves. The senti ment of the congress was that our natural resources should he con served, yet it was clearly brought out that they should he developed for the use and needs of the people of the Northwest, and not bottled up for future generations to enjoy. Alaska and her needs were discussed. It was the sentiment, as voiced hy the speakers, that Alaska ought to be opened up for the people. It was quite evident that IMnchotlsm and its effect on the development of the great Northwest Is not in favor among the men of the Northwest De velopment League." Oregon In Foremost. As usual, Oregon played an im portant part in the congress. There was a splendid delegation of II ve wlres to represent the state. The biggest social feature of the session was the banquet given to the presi dents of the railroads, the officers of the congress, editors nf the Seattle papers and other distinguished guests by the Oregon delegation at the lin tel Hen l tie on Thursday night, June lilh. Mr. Duryea had entire charge of I his affair. Kugi'iie got. good publicity at Seat tle. Its representative was made vice-president of the Oregon delega tion. Much Interest hi Kngeiie. The railroad men expressed much interest in Kugene and the surround ing country. Mr. Hill assured Mr. Duryea that he would visit this coun try in the near future and make a trip through all the vitlleys in his auto. Mr. Mill carries his automo bile with him on bis spcchil and whenever he stops, runs it out and starts out without delav. Bur nett, of Salem, was named grand master; S. S. Spencer, of Eugene, deputy grand master; William A. Hrlstol, of Portland, senior grand warden; Frank .1. Miller, of Salem, junior grand warden; W. A. Cleland. gram! treasurer, and James K. Rob inson, grand secretary. X. H. Looney, superintendent of the Slate Training School, has sub mitted bis resignation' to the State Hoard, lie has been superintendent of the school since 1104, being ap pointed under the administration of Governor Gcer. It is reported that ( L. Starr, secretary of the State Tax Commission, will be a candidate to succeed Mr. Looney. The position carries a salary of $1500 a year.
