The various Carnival Committees
were called together Wednesday af
ternoon at four o'clock by vice-Fretd-dent
Fisher of the Commercial Club,
and each committee, through its
chairman, made a report of the pro
gress made by the committee relative
to the plans for the Strawberry Car
nival. These reports show that
everything is progressing finely, and
the most successful Carnival ever
given by the Commercial Club will
be held next week.
Mr. Alley Is now In Portland, and
Will be joined by a number of Rose
burg live wires, who expect to make
arrungements for a Koseburg special
train with little trouble, as a number
of Portland business men have al
ready sent notice to the Club that
they fully expect to attend the Car
nival this year.
There will be three bands, and the
program daily will Include a series
of band concerts. The decorated
automobile parade and the merch
ants' floats parade will be represen
tative, and a large number of Kose
burg's enterprising firms expect to
appear In this parade. There will be
1000 children in the children's pa
rade. The decorations will be finer
than they have ever been before. The
street attractions of all kinds better,
the prizes more valuable, and there
Is every Indication that this Carnival
will be the best ever given.
The Umpqua Valley strawberry
will be especially featured, and the
Strawberry Committee expects to
serve every visitor from outside of
the county, and especially the Port
land delegation and the State Grange
delegates, with strawberries and
cream.
The program committee will prob
ably meet Saturday and the official
program of the Carnival will be an
nounced early next week
The weather is ideal for the pro
duction of Btrawberries and roses,
and there is every reason to believe
that the present fine weather will
continue through the coming week.
In addition to the State Grange
meeting, which will bring hundreds
of visitors, the Southern Oregon Med
ical Association will hold Its annual
Convention In Roseburg on Friday,
May 17.
Reitorts from other towns In the
county Indicate that they all Intend
to be well represented at the Carni
val, and expect to assist as fully as
they can In advertising the wonder
ful climate and early products of
Douglas County.
The committee reports made at the
meeting Thursday night show con
clusively that the Carnival next ween
Is to be a success In every sense of
the word.
The Civic Improvement Committee
appointed by Mayor Micelll also met
Thursday evening and organized a
general clean-up movement for the
rity, so everytning win oe looaiog

Mr. Alley arrived In Portland yes
terday as the herald of a delegation
of his fellow townsmen, all of whom
will be armed with invitations which
are expected to induce several hund
red Portland pople to join the exodus
to the home of the early strawberry.
Mr. Alley engaged quarters at the
Imperial for the Roseburg delegation,
which will arrive this morning.
"Roseburg Is going to do better
than she ever did before," said Mr.
Alley last night. "The coming car
nival will outshine anything of the
kind ever held In Oregon, except the
Rose Festival, and we are going to
give the managers of that institution
a run for their money. Roseburg is
only a small space on the map of
Oregon, but she has always boosted

"Thursday, the first day of the big
berry carnival, will be designated as
Portland day. It will he opened with
a decorated automobile parade, and
another by the school children, the
latter causing great interest because
for the day began with a praise ser
vice from 6 to 7 this morning, which
was followed by a conference session
at 9. The roll call revealed that a
fairly full delegation was present
from most of the churches compris
ing the conference.
The president read an address ln
which he recounted the progress made
during the year particularly during
Its latter half, substantial gains be
ing reported from several localities.
The working committees were then
appointed and the session closed to
be followed a few minutes later by an
evangelistic service. At 2:45 and 8
p. m. of each day sermons will be
preached. Resides the local confer
ence force there are present Elder C.
W. Flaiz, of Walla Walla, and Klder
W. F. Martin, of Portland. Others
from abroad are expected. A song
service of 13 minutes will precede the
afternoon and evening services.
