AGAINST CONSOIJJMTIOX. Portland Journal. The Oregon Agricultural College should be let alone. Jn the midst of lti aplcudld unefulneHN it ought not to be tinkered with. No initiative measure ought to be launched to make it the tall of a university. No movement should be hastily Inaugurated to load it down with an ill-fitting university attach ment. So experimental project of any kind should he inaugurated that may run the risk of a doubtful out come. As a separate Institution the col Ieto, Is doing a great work. Only Ihuse who Inspect it have the faintest oomprelieiiHion of what it Is doing. Cari Gray, president of the Htl! lines, says It Is Oregon's greatest In dustrial asset. U. S. JossHyn makes the hii in e statement. Kvery Portland business man who Investigated the college hint week has the same idea. .tie Institution has become so dis tinctively agricultural and industrial, auii has won such renown lu those llfrs. that California students to the luiini-er of 4!t are inking advantage of it courses. California has a con solidated university and agricultural tclleKe, but Tew there ever hear of the ugrlrultuial feature. When Cal ifornium, want agricultural education they send their hoys to Oregon. Idaho has many ctudents at the Oregon college. So has W ashington. So have many other stntet. What splendid evidence that the college l doing a great work, a work that has given it a national reputation? When it is doing ho welt, why hitch It up to another institution that does not helong to it, and that It does not belong to? Why hamper Its work by loading It down with a university feature? Why multi ply Ita already arduous and manifold functions by adding other functions that are strange to and unrelated to it? Why tinker with, or experi ment with, or molest an establish ment that is so effectively working out the destiny that the federal law ret up for It, and for whirl) nature in Oregon made bo splendid a field" If an atempt Is made to consoli date the agricultural college with the slate university, agricultural educa tion in the educational endeavor of Oregon will be set back ten years. l:e agricultural and Industrial edu cation of the state may be harmed forever. The identity and the agri iiiltural distinctiveness of the college may be lost, never to be restored. The real fields of the agricultural collegM and the state university are us different as those of a law college and a dental college. There Is no more relation between them than bet v.eeii a theological school and a v (.man's seminary. Wherever thev lire In duplication It is be.ause of l.e encroachinenis of one upon the other. To Join them would he to nm ke one sit hordinale to t lie other, and In alnioM every Instance where It has beeti ntenipted the agricul tural feature has lost its identity. In the . . infill. 1. if.
