Have you ever thought of the
feasibility of a good wagon aud auto
mobile road from Roseburg. Myrtle
Creek or Kiddle, up the South U nip
qua River and Elk Creek to Cratar
Lake, via the Rogue River route?
It not, look it up and you will be sur
prised to find that such a road cau be
built at a comparatively small cost,
and on a maximum grade of less than
eight per cent.
A glance at the map will show you
that this Is a natural topographical
route. In fact it i. a water grade
the entire distance. Unlike any oth
er route, It is not a matter of climb
ing up on hill after another, just to
go down. There la but one hill to
climb. Degiuulng at Roseburg you
will have a gradual aud almost Im
perceptible grade until you reach the
top at the heudwuters of Elk Creek
in Douglas County aud Trail Creek
in Jackson County. This point la a
low divide on the range, which forms
the bouudry line between the two
counties. The route from this saddle
to Rogue Klver at Trail Is also a
gentle grade, not greater than on
the Douglas aide. This 1. also a
feasible route for a railroad, which
could be built on a grade ot less than
one per cent.
Leaving the Southern Pacific Rail
road at either Roseburg, Myrtle
Creek or Riddle, the route takes you
through one of the most fertile and
beaulilul valleys In the stale. Un
til you reach Tiller you are cuu
stantly passing extensive fruit or
chards, highly improved farms aud
maguilicleut country homes, popu
lated by a properoua uud contented
people. It you have not seen this
beautiful valley, you bad belter do
so at once. You will be umuzed ut
its wonderful plcturestiuuuess us It
stretches east uud west ulong the

among the low foothills extuuding to
the north uud south. Here Nature
has concentrated ber greatest efforts

purest of water, the immense fer
tility ot the soil, a delightful climate,
suitable to the successiul production
of all kiuds of fruit, vegetables and
farm crops,- while the lulls abouud

the best fishing In the world; a
r-aradise, so to speak, for the sports
man. Certainly mans' ideals can bo

climbing over a 20 to 2'i per cent,
grade to a height of from two thous
and to twenty five hundred feet, in
each case unly to drop as many times
into canyons. The Tiller route is
the only one, leading to Medford and
California points, that does not have
to cross four or five mountain ranges.
Five or six thousand people, rom
every part of the world, visit Cra''r
Lake annually uud many thousand
more pass through Douglas L'ounty
ly automobile, to aud from Califor
nia and Washington. If this route
could be develoiK-d into a siiWaianUal
automobile road, what would It mean
for Roseburg uud the Sauth l'inptj'j9
Country? It would mean that many
of these thousands of people would
stop ut the above railroad points.

They would camp, fish and hunt en
route. This Is a wealthy class of
people and they would spend money.
Why not make this route attractive
so that they can get off the train
here and get to (.'rater Lake before

quarter of a million dollars annually

than any other one move
