Portland Journal: The strike of the textile worker! at Lawrence ended yesterday. It results in an average increase of 20 per cent in wages. It continued for 61 days. It cost the mill owners a million dollars, and the workers $1,350,000. It disclosed that textile workers were receiving an average wage of $9 a week for men and $6 for wo men. It revealed that most of the workers are of the pauper labor of Europe, and that the mill owners are establishing a system of pauper labor in America. It exposed the melancholy fact that there is a pau per funeral among the workers every other day. It showed that the textile workers have been living at Lawrence under intolerable life conditions. Because of beggars' wages, they were, for .economy's sake, compelled to live in , crowded and squalid quarters, in . dark basements and filthy tene ments. Half a dozen families dwelt together In habitations barely roomy enough for one. There was no clean liness, no privacy, no earthly chance for decent life conditions. It was a , condition closely bordering on hu man slavery, and in the extent and character of its pauperism, a Na tional scandal. But Lawrence has been a revela tion. The textile Industry is one of the industries most highly protected . by the tariff. Its mill owners are ;rich almost beyond the dreams of avarice. All of its corporations pay enormous dividends and have swol len surpluses of undivided profits. But It was not the tariff that sal vaged the Lawrence workers. It was not the American tariff, loudly - touted as In the interest of American labor, that redeemed them from an Impossible wage. Their rescue was sot the tariff, but the strike and the merciless exposure by the United Press of the inhuman conditions among the textile workers. After these 61 days at Lawrence, let the truth be told. The tariff does not protect American labor. It protects American mill owners. They conress it now in the granting of a twenty per cent wage increase to 300.000 woTkers. They have pleaded guilty. INJURED SAWMILL MAX GKT9 92230 DAMAGES. EUGENE, Or. March 9. The Jury In the case of William H. Handy vs. J. H. Chambers gave a verdict this afternoon for the plaintiff of $2250. Suit was brought for $50,000 on ac count of peculiar injuries sustained in the defendant's sawmill near Cot tage Grove. Owing to the nature of the injuries, the case attracted much attention.
