Show, today, in tpeuking of the sec
ond annual exposition of the associa
tion, to be held at the Union Stock
yards, North Portland, March 18, 19
and 20.
"I have received many letters and
telegrams," said Mr. Lively, "from
stockmen and others Interested In
the Northwest livestock industry,
promlHlng their hearty support and
attendance at the show. I have been
notified that a special party of 200
will he here from Lewlston. Idaho.
Special railroad rates have been
made between Oregon points Riid
Portland for the show, and stockmen
from Vale, Haker, La Grande, Pen
dleton, Joseph, (lend, Kedmond and
other sections of the state have ex
pressed their Intention of attending.
"The show thla year will be much
more extensive and Interesting than
the one last year. The big tent al
ready In place will provide protection
from the weather If protection Is
needed.
"The single steer exhibit will he
unusual. It will be the most wonder
ful showing of the kind ever made
west of the Rocky Mountains. The
exhibit of Short Horn cattle and hogs
will alBO attract much attention. The
showing of pure bred sheep will not
he aB extensive as we had hoped for,
hut It will be Very representative
The draft linrno entries Indicate
splendid show in that line.
"No entry fees are charged, there
are no admission fees and no one
makes any money on the show. The
cash prizes offered come from a fund
raised by popular subscription.
"The idea of the show Is to pro
mote the interests of the Northwest's
livestock industry. There Is need of
a Northwest center for the Industry
and we want to make Portland that
center."
Among the entries Is that of the
Percheron mare "Amorlta," owned by
the University of Idaho and bred by
MaaBdam & Wheeler, of Fairfield
Iowa. This mare Is six years old and
weighs 2070 pounds. "Amorlta was
grand champion at tho Internationa
Livestock Show at Chicago In 1909
and was reserve champion Percheron
mare at the 1911 show. The mare is
believed to be one of the most perfect
types of the Percheron In America

From all indications the building of
the Eugene-CoOB Hay Railroad has
at last become a fact to the people of
this section of the country. W. Walk
er, right-of-way agent of the South
ern Pacific Company, Is taking 30
day options on all land through which
his company s line will pass. In each
rase where buildings are In the way
he has given Instructions to have
them removed by July 1.
Final payments have been made
on all options before becoming de
linquent and .Mr. Walker states tha
the company Is ready to pay cash for
all rights of way when clear titles by
abstract can be shown, and the 30
day option is for the purpose of giv
ing his company time to examine
cloudy titles.

Portland after completing plans for
the construction of a Balinou cannery
on the Sluslaw River for Tollent &
Grant, of Astoria.
For a few years Mr. Sun born has
operated the Hurd Co-operative Pack
ing Company's cannery on the SIub-law.

Injury under most conditions was bis
belief. There is still a great deal to
learn about the action of frosts and
the efficiency of various heaters and
fuels, he said. He advocated oil as a
better fuel than either wood or coal,
because of the ease of handling and
lighting It, and the fact that there Is
practically no loss in the storing,
wbereaa coal stored away loses Its
heating qualities to some extent.
W ill Test Spray on llerrles.
A. L. Lovett, of the crop pest force
or the Oregon Agricultural College,
will spend most of the summer In
the vicinity of Portland making In
vestigations of insect pests. He will
inaugurate an experiment to save the
gooseberry and currant crops from
the fruit fly which at present makes
these crops a failure In some parts of
the state. He will use a spray for
this purpose which has been found
successful in South Africa in combat
ing the Mediterranean fruit fly. At
the time the petals fall a spray of
two and a half pounds of sugar to
three ounces of lead arsenate and
four gallons of water will be applied
and this will be repeated three weeks
later. Prof. Mally, who spent three
years experimenting with this same
spray in Cape Colony, South Africa,
says the files ate the mixture readily.
