joicing over the escape of King
Emanuel, whose life was attempted
today by Atono D'Alba, an admitted
anarchist. He fired three shots at
the King, all missing. One bullet
struck Major Lutiga, one of the
King's cavalry escort, and seriously
wounded him. The would-be assassin
was arrested.
The attempted murder came short
ly after the King left the palace with
the Queen to attend a memorial ser
vice In honor of his father, who was
assassinated several years ago. lie
was near the Pantheon where mass
was being said, when D'Alba broke
through the cheering crowds and

enginemen, conductors and trainmen

that the railroad "live up to its work

Champ Clark will probably get the
Kansas delegation to the Baltimore
convention as a result of the action
to be taken by the Democratic state
convention, which opened hero today,
but the Wflaon supporters are still
hopeful. Clark and W'IIboii have run
a neck and neck race" tn all of the
county conventions, and have been
practically the only two candidates
considered.
The holding of the convention In
this city is a victory for the Clark
forces, as the Seventh District has
declared for the Mtsmourian. Nearly
all of the candidates for state offices
and leaders in the party are for
Clark, with the exception of George
Hedges, of O'aihe, a gubernatorial as
pirant, who Is understood to be a
Wilson man. J. H. Hlllard. of To-
peka, is alpo In the race for the
Democratic nomination for Governor,
his platform demanding a sub mission
of tho prohibition law to the people
Clark sentiment has been fostered
hy the clergymen and memhers of
the Christian or Catnphellite denomi
nation, as the Speaker ta affiliated
with that sect, which is powerful in
Kansas.

Following the announcement Inst
Monday that Roseburg was to re
ceive a new, six-story hotel, plans aro
now being formulated for the en
largement and general improvement
of the Hotel MeClnllen. owtied by
Rice & Rice, the local furniture firm.
Martin Schncht. of Portland, the ar
chitect who designed the Perkins
building, Is In the city In consulta
tion with C. H. M. Gronvold, manager
of tho Hotel MrCInllen, regarding the
projected building work.
No definite announcement of the
plans can be made until a day or two
yet. but It Is practically settled that
a four story wing to the present brick
portion of the hotel will rise on the
Jackson street side of the property
and an ndditlonal story will be added
tn the latter to make both of uniform
height. The old wooden annex on
the Main street side will be moved
further north and used for sample
rooms and living quarters for em
ployes, leaving a space for a Inrge
court until such timo as It may he
occupied by another wing.
The Improvements now under con
templation will hu Installed this slim
mer. The present main building will
be considerably remodeled to give it
a modern form. The proposed new
wing will contain the kitchen and
grill nnd about 70 rooms.
