Harry Lane is a candidate for the
Democratic nomination for United
States Senator.
He announced this decision this
morning following a conference with
. local Democratic leaders yesterday,
t when a petition urging him to go in
to the fight was presented and be
was told that he is the most available
.candidate ot his party.
I Dr. Lane expects in a few days to
announce a definite platform in
which he will discuss the principles
he represents and on which he will
ask the support of the Democratic
voters in the primary nominating
election. If nominated. Dr. Lane in
tends to make a thorough canvass of
the state and deliver addresses (in
every county.
Entrance of Dr. Lane into the
Senatorial contest gives the Demo
crats the same number of candidates
from which to select their nominee
as the Republicans have, four can
didates having entered the race for
each party nomination. The three
opponents ot Dr. Lane are: Walter
M. Pierce, of Hot Lake; Milton A.
Miller, ot Lebanon, and O. P. Coshow,
of Roseburg. It Is regarded probable
that the quartet will remain in the
fight to the finish, although It has
been intimated that one of Lane's
rivals may withdraw.

and the erection of a school building,
to be erected on the school site

cations prepared by Joseph W. Dow,
Architect. Rooms 3 and 4, Roseburg
National Rank building, Roseburg.

School Board. Roseburg. Oregon, and
also at the office of said architect,
on and after March 8th, 1912.
Contractors desiring plans are re
quired to deposit Fifteen ($15.00)
Dollars, made payable to Joseph W.
Dow, Architect, for the privilege of
retaining plans from office for nine
(9) days. Said amount to be for

to return plans before that time. All

rejected, and to the successful bid

ance with his bid snd giving a satis

reject any and all bids, and to waive

Mrs. A. Thompson arrived here
this morning from Phoenix, Aril.,
and is visiting with her daughter,

Mrs. Terry, recently operated on
at Mercy Hospital for a cataract In
one of her eyes, was able to return
home to Glendale today.
Mrs. Catherine Voorhees left this
morning on her return to Vancouver,
Wash., after a visit here at tbe home
of her son, R. B. Voorhees.
Mrs. W. E. Ott and baby left this
morning for Pratum, Marlon Coun
ty, where Mr. Ott's father, who has
been 111, continues to get worse.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas O. Dabney,
of Seattle, are visiting here with her
mother, Mrs. Harvey Jones. They
are enroute to Los Angeles for a vacation.
The case ot the state against 8. 8.
Johns, charged with failure to main
tain fish ladders in his South Myrtle
Creek logging dams, was tried before
Justice Gaither at Myrtle Creek Tues
day and was taken under advisement
by the magistrate. Johns aecense
was that he had constructed the re
quired ladders, but that they had
been washed out, unknown to mm,
by high water.
Daniel W. Welner, known In police
circles throughout the West as "Dan
ny," and as the captor of the no
torious outlaw Harry Tracey, prior to
Tracey's sensational escape from
the Sulem penitentiary, dropped dead
Tuesday on a Southern Pacific train

way (o Portland, where Welner had
lived since 1878. The cause of death
was heart disease.
