1 have been tempted many times
to write, not In their derense, for
they need no defense, but In praise
of a variety so little known here In
the West, but which are growing sub
stantially In favor all over the coun
try. I have hesitated to write for
different reasons. One Is that I love
the entire eight varieties of this
breed regardless of their color, and
what I would say of the one would
in a measure be applicable to the
other seven. Another reason is the
fear that I might say something
which may be construed as a negative
reflection on the other fellow's fan
cy. Another reason for hesitating Is
the fart that the "head lines" so
often seen at the top of an article
reading, "Why I breed such and
such," are In some Instances worn
threadbare like an old patch patched
over from time to time. The origin
al patch may have been an excellent
piece of work, performed by the
hand of un experienced artist along
that line, b t so many attempts by
inexperienced copyists to reproduce
It aB un original piece of work, leaves
it as It were, threadbare, showing
some of Its original richness, yet
withal leaving it badly distorted.
However, when I see from reports
of the large Eastern and largest Mid
dle Western shows (and In some In
stances where the entry fees are
from one to two dollars for single
entry, with 50 to 100 birds entered)
the rapidly growing popularity, with
out blare of trumpet of this hand
some bird, I am convinced that no
one should hesitate in singing the
praises of the Huff Wyandotte.
A number of years ago when the
fancy bug got hold of me I was un
decided, being Inexperienced, what
breed I would really prefer, but felt
sure Its color must be buff, regard
less of Its name. After thinking the
matter over carefully I concluded It
would be wisest, while getting ex
perience, to try three different breeds
of decidedly different type and char
acteristics. I then purchased from
responsible breeders, one breeding

pen of small buff birds and one
breeding pen of Buff Wyandottea. I
received the three pens all in the
first week of January, all birds were
given the same kind of quarters, the
same kind and amount of feed and
the same gentle care! On the first
day of July the egg records showed
47 more eggs on the Buff Wyan
dottea' card than on either of the
others. This, then, was "Exhibit
A," favorable to the Huff Wyan
dottes. As I fed my birds and gath
ered eggs I studied their habits and
peculiarities. Often I would sit In
the yards for hours at a time, watch
ing and netting them, trying to make
friends of the three breeds. I sooifl
discovered that there was something
Inherited from some of its ancestors
which made the Buff Wyandotte more
suspectible to kind treatment than
the others. This was "Exhibit B,"
favorable to the Buff Wyandottea.
After the young chicks began to
grow and feather out, symmetry was
more In evidence, quality more pro
nounced In the Buff Wyandottes than
In the others. While some of the
others were bony and awkward and
seemingly undecided as to what they
wanted to be on reaching maturity,
the Buff Wyandottes proclaimed
their Identity from the beginning,
and only exerred himself to attain
perfection In the end. This was
"Exhibit C," favorable to the Buff
Wyandotte.
As the season advanced and It be
came time to pick out and eat the
culls (yes I had culls, even Kelly
hogs has them) we noticed a peculiar
roundness, a richer tint of color, a
finer texture of flesh, a somewhat
easier fowl to prepare for the table
In the Buff Wyandotte than seemed
to be noticeable In the other breeds.
This was "Exhibit D," favorable to
the Buff Wyandotte.
As the time for shows came to
hand and I began to be imbned with
the Idea that I must show my colors.
I went to reading back numbers of
the poultry journals and 1 noticed
now and then reports where the Buff
Wyandotte had won "Special for best
colored bird In the show," "Best
bird In the show, all classes compet
ing," "Best bird In the American
class," etc., and when In fitting my
birds up for my first experience as
an exhibitor, giving all breeds equal
attention, I found my Buff Wyan
dottes the easiest to condition from
the start, the quickest to learn their
poses, and when I had the pleasure
of winning some of the most coveted
prizes with the Buff Wyandottes, I
made tip my mind that this was ex
hibit E to Z, in favor of the Buff
Wyandottes. and iu the words of the
sainted. Naomi, I said to them,
"Where I goest thou wilt go. thy
breed shall be my breed." I do not
wish it to be understood that I can
not see the good qualities In the
other breeds of the brother fanciers,
because I cuu see thein and can ap
preciate the brothers' view-point. I
never pass a bird that Is entitled to
the name tho-.oughbred without stop
In K to admire it. and if it is a good
one I think of the prrde It's owner
must have In it.
I have not bothered you with the
origin of the Buff Wyandotte, his
tory or family tree. It is Immaterial
how much Irish, English or Hindu
there may be in Its make up. I am
only writing of a variety of the breed
I have learned to love and as I sit
in my breeding pens feeding my birds
from my hand and listen to their
songs of contentment, admire their
rich golden buff, and plumpness of
bod. I cannot refrain from the song
of love I sing, whether ft falls on
responsive ears or not.
