years, son of Ueorge lleecroft, Jr., of
Winchester, and a neighbor boy
named Taylor were playing with a
hand-ax Sunday. lleecroft would
Jerk his hand out of the way as Tay

block. That Is he got It out of the
way excepting once, but on account
of that single exceptiou lleecroft Is

Walter M. Pierce, of Hot Lake, and
O. P. Coshow, of Roseburg, both can
didates for United States Senator on

meeting. Both predicted the election
of a Democratic President and the
carrying of Oregon by the Democrats
if the party gets together.

Jersey. While Clark will be In a
position to control the stnte conven
tion which meets on Thursday, he
does not control the delegates from
the Congressional districts.

ON FINDING UK BODY.
Coroner X. T. Jewett it in receipt
of the following self-explanatory re
port on the finding of the body of
Henry Rossruan, who was drowned
near Elkton on February 6, 1912, at
which time another man was also
drowned, and Wm. Rossman, a
brother of the deceased, was res
cued: Elkton, Or., March , 191!.
I, J. E. Kow, Justice of the Peace
for Elkton Precinct, Douglas County,
Oregon, have this day examined the
body found In the L'mpqua River at
the Military crossing Just above the
Wm. Sawyers place, 10 miles below
Elkton, and I cut the clothes from
his body, examined the contents of
his pockets In the presence ot Wm.
Rossman and C'has. Clemens. All
I found therein was one small buck
skin wallet containing the platform
of the Socialist party of 1910. I
found the body to be that of Henry
Rossman, who drowned In the above
mentioned river H mile 'above the
old Smith ferry on the road from
Elkton to Oakland on Feb. 6, 1912.
I turned the body over to Wm. Ross
man for burial.

Chief Justice White of the United
States Court branded as "far reach
ing and dangerous doctrine," was de
livered today by the United StateB
Supreme Court when It dealt a severe
blow to cut rate" stores by holding
that the sale or use ot patented arti
cles contrary to the license restric
tions prescribed by the patentee Is
an Infringement of patent.
Justice Lamar, as well as the Chief
Justice, dissented to the majority
opinion ot the court, which was de
livered by Justice I.urton.
The opinion wus rendered In the
caBe of the Dick Company, mimeo
graph manufacturers, against Sidney
Henry, a sales agent who was al
leged to have used on one of Dick's
machines, Ink manufactured by a
rival, which was contrary to the Dick
license.
The court ruled: "Patents are a
statutory monopoly and Congress
alone Is empowered to change law
limiting a patentees rights."

"This majority opinion curtails
the right of society. Everyone knows
there Is now widespread limitation
to use and price of patented articles.
I bought a razor lately and found I
had Infringed on the patent, accord
ing to this decision, by paying the
price asked, which was below that
prescribed by the patentee. W ho can
predict how far this practice will
spread with the sanction now given
by the court?"

(. T. Hogg, manager of the West
Coast property in the Uohemla dis
trict, was In the city yesterday with
a gold brick to be forwarded to the
assay office at Seattle. The brick
will bring close to 18000 and Is the
clesnup of the Champion for about
a month. The Champion mill has
been running much of the winter
while the other mills have been In
active.
Weather conditions are becoming
favoralile for spring work In the dis
trict and mine owners are sending up
crews to start operations. The mill
on the Vesuvius property will be
running again at an early date with
the ore taken out during the winter
It Is predicted by owners of property
In the district that this season will
be the most active since ore was dis
covered In the district.
