Some Good Points of
The Buff Orpingtons

Time has now mown another swath
across the field of events. The har
vest is again ripe and invites the
reaper with his sharpened scythe.
At such a time, under these condi
tions, we sing our Orpington socg.
and present to you a few facts about
the Buff Orpingtons.
In the first place, they were or
iginated by the late Wm. Cook, of
Kent. England, and the name Orping
ton was taken from .Mr. Cook's house
and also from a village a short dis
tance from Kent.
It was In 1876 that Mr. Cook
started on the Orpingtons, but It was
not until 1S& that he began to pro
duce Buffs. At this time it was a
well known fact that he possessed
the best laying Buff Cochins in the
country. Some had laid 41 eggs
in 41 days (that being extremely
good in those days) and were not so
broody aB most of them were.
He started by mating Golden
Spangled Hamburg cocks with colored
Dorking hens of good size and of the
best laying strains obtainable. Many
pullets from this crosB came of a
reddish brown color.. These were
mated to Buff Cochin cocks of the
marvelous laying strains mentionel
above. Hamburgs were selected be
cause they laid more eggs than any
other breed of fowls then in exist'
ence. The Dorking was used to get
the length or breast bone and fine
quality of meat, while the Cochins
were used for their size and also their
good winter laying qualities.
It was at the dairy Bhow in Eng
land in 1894 that Mr. Cook first pre
sented the Buffs to the public. H
had about 2000 first-class specimens
and all that he could afford to sell
were Immediately purchased, thus
showing that they were very popular
from the beginning and have re
mained so ever since. They becan e
popular absolutely on their merits
It is a well known fact that they will
live and thrive where other fowls
cannot even live. One male can run
with 8 or 10 hens with the best of
results. They are of a very quiet
disposition and if raised up to the
ttanaard weight a four toot fence
will keep them In.
They make excellent mothers- If
allowed to hatch chicks, but at the
san e time If you don't want them
to set they can be broken up very
eaBily. They also possess a tremen
dous amount of vitality, which makes
their chicks easy to raise.
Probably the fowls that you now
own . stop laying when the bad
weather startB In. If so, try Buff
Orpingtons and 1 do not think that
you will be bothered in that way.
Somo very high prices have been
paid for this grand variety of Orping
tons (the Buffs), but "the best al
ways pays." One will always get far
better interest on their money oy
buying the best stock.
