Definite Information as to the ex tension of the Pacific and Eastern this aumnier cannot be secured. It Is known that Chief Engineer (jerlg has been In consultation with President Carl Gray of the Hill lines In Oregon regarding the matter, but Mr. Gerlg o far declines to make a statement. The appearance of the surveying party In the field Is taken to indicate, however, that construction work Is to be started soon. It Ib said that the present line Is not entirely satisfac tory and that the crew In the field at present Is to endeavor to find a more satisfactory route, eliminating a large number of sharp curves and heavy grades. Hawk, the man Hendricks was convicted of hav ing suborned, In which he sweara that not only was the latter not guilty of Inducing lilin to commit perjury, but actually warned him against the commission of the act. It would ap pear from the uffidavit and other ruciB In the case that Mr. Hendricks was simply caught In the dragnet of land fraud prosecutions and owing to the technicality of the law, could not legally escape paying the penalty for a crime of which be was Innocent. That CO 000 to 75,000 school children have been enlisted in garden contests throughout the state as a result of the earth education program of busf ness organizations, and that this plan of giving boys and girls something practical, wholesome and Interesting to do Is to solve one of the great problems of citizen making, was as serted yesterday by State Superin tendent of Schools L. R. Alderman while in Portland. "I want to congratulate the earth education committee of Portland and the citizens generally on the enthu siasm and Interest being taken in the garden contest work among the schools of Portalnd," said Professor Alderman. "I find throughout the state that this Is helping create a wider merest in this garden work. "In my opinion Oregon Is going to have the greatest school children's exhibit ever displayed in the United States. The hoys and girls outside of Portland think they are going to eclipse the city boys and girls in the growing of things. I can tell from the interest being shown In Portland that their city cousins are going to try to 'show them.' I nd tint ry N Habit. "Any system of education that does not develop industry Is an Inadequate system. Industry is a habit, and habit Is the thing that controls us. We do today what we did yesterday, and we will do next year what we did this year. A boy or girl who arrives at the age of 16 years without the habit of Industry Is heavily handi capped. "Not long ago a man came into my office and complained of the schools of his city. His boys were not getting along well. I happened to know the teachers and knew that they were; conscientious and well prepared. I When 1 asked what his boys did out of school he said that was the trouble. Me had nothing for them to do. A study of the case revealed the fact that his boys spent their time upon the streets and were not In 1 sympathy with school or teachers. This man had moved into the city to give his boys an education and without a habit of Industry being es tablished they were getting the wrong kind of education. They were already giving their father and teach er trouble and from present indica tions the end is not yet. OiU-oMoor Work. "Is there not something for those boys to do? A little investigation In the city referred to by the ex- rarmer showed that there were very fine gardens even in this time of year. One garden had a fine supply of carrots, beets, black Spanish radish, multiplying onion., turnips, cabbage and greens. This man bad plenty of room, yet they went with out or depended on vegetables gotten rrom a grocery store. The father wsb bemoaning the fact that his children had nothing to do, when In reality there was something for them to do of interest to them and of profit to the home. "The greatest menace I see in Ore gon to good citizenship is the fact that so many boys and girls do not have systematic out-of-door work to do. They are growing up without habits of industry and without knowl edge that their time may be turned Into money and other things of value. "The Industrial work In Oregon that ts being so well received by the people of both city and country and is being put forward by the State Hankers' Association, the business or ganizations, the commercial clubs, the school authorities. Is going to give something worth while to do for .10, 000 to 7".. 000 boys and glrlB in this state. It is going to opeji their eyes to some of the possibili ties of 'agriculture. They are going to see what fun there is In being a producer. In this way they aro work ing in nature's laboratory and learn ing the science of health and wealth and useful productiveness. In my opinion for a child to have charge of an animal develops a side of character that can be de veloped In no other way.
