Struck by a Southern Pacific passen
ger train at East First street and
llawthorne avenue as he was at
tempting to cross in front of it yes
terday afternoon, Amos Shockley, a
Portland" ptoneer, died at C.ood
Samaritan Hospital two and one-half
hours after the accident. Moth of his
legs had been severed by the locomo
tive. According to witnesses Mr. Shock
ley was walking east on the north
side of Hawthorne avenue when the
gates were lowered across the street
to stop traffic for the passage of
Roseburg local No. IT. which was
leaving the city. Mr. Shockley. they
say. was evidently In a hurry and
ran under the bars.
-Members of the train crew saw the
move of the old man and made ef
forts to bring their train to a stop,
but were unsuccessful. .
