Hot Scout Meeting in Portland is

PORTLAND. Or.. Marin 10.
Long, sibilant hisses, wild groans
and ribald Jeers from a crowd of
men representing the local head
quarters of the Socialist and I. W. W
organizations, who packed the front
seats at the meeting, under tVe
auspices of the Board of Education,
to be addr.-t.vd in Gipsy Smith audi
torium yesterday by General Baden
Powell, made It Impossible for the
s-ieakers to be understood and ended
the meeting In a turmoil.
At the close the Socialists hurried
their own speakers to the platform,
from which "militarism" was de
nounced in rabid terms.
It was Just at the very height .f
the meeting, while James E. West, of
Washington. U C. chief executive
of the Boy Seoul movement in Ameri
ca, was reading the Scout oath, that
a party of lads, only too evidently
Incited by those opposed to the meet
ing, rose and stalked out in a oody,
while the wooden building fairly
echoed with the cheers and yells of
the serried rows of Socialists.
It was In the midst of uproarious
yells of ".Militia." "Lawrence" and
"Massachusetts" that the Baden
Powell party left the building, while
further hisses speeded their auto
on Its way.
The uproar In the auditorium di
rectly "followed up" the street dem
onstrations of the Socialists Friday
afternoon and yesterday morning
when Baden-Powell and the Boy
Scout movement was satirized and
derided by ribald banners.

PURELY
It is a generally reeopnired truth that medicines made from vegetable
infrredicnts are a great deal better adapted to the delicate human system, and
aaler in every way, than those composed of strong imineral mixtures and
compounds. Mercury, potash, arsenic, etc., which are used in the manufac
ture of most blood medicines, are too violent in their action, and frequently
derange the system by disturbing the stomach and digestion, atiecting
the towels, and when used for a prolonged period often cause Rheumatism.
S S. S. is the only blood medicine guaranteed absolutely and purely vegeta
ble. It is made entirely of roots, herbs and barks, selected for their purify
ing and healing qualities. S. S. S. cures Rheumatism, Catarrh. Sores arid
I'lcers, Scrofula. Contagious Blood Poison, and all other blood diseases,
because it cleanses and purities the blood, and at the same time builds up
the entire system by its fine vegetable tonic effects. S. S. S. may be taken
by young and old with absolute safety, and with tie assurance that it will
cure the diseases and disorders due to an impure and poisoned blood supply,
even reaching down and removing hereditary taints. Book on the blood and

Eugene Guard: A grading outfit of
70 tons magnitude has arrived and

two and put to use In throwing up
the grade for the Oregon Electric
between the long trustle and the site
of the big steel bridge. This grade
will average about 18 feet In height
and the machine will do the work
by simply taking two trips over the
ground, one on each side of the grade.
Something of the magnitude of the

realize that It will take about ten
days to set It up. The boom or crane
which carries the shovel Is sixty feet
In length. The shovel will take two
yards of dirt at a trip and about
2000 yards a day can be easily

the entire crew.
The machine will be assembled
near the depot, from which place It
will be propelled under Its own power
to the site of the first job. When In
