2 of the Hercules Sandstone Com
pany, one mile north of Tenino to
day, 45,000 pounds of black powder
and 1200 poupds of dynamite were
used. ; , ,
The blast was fired by a battery
touched off by Major J. B. Cava
naugh, of Seattle, In charge of the
Government's coast engineering de
partment, at a point 15,000 feet dis
tant. The shock waB almost imper
ceptible a quarter of a mile away,
but as the Immense bluff was blown
loose and the cloud of smoke filled
the air, an Imposing sight was pre
sented. Hundreds rushed to the scene to
note the effect, which was the piling
of monster boulders the size of
houses In heaps.
